UK links of Stockholm bomber investigated

Search warrant issued for house in Luton as it emerges that Taimour al-Abdaly studied in Britain.

By New Statesman

Britain’s security services are investigating the UK links of the suicide bomber who struck Sweden on Saturday night.

Two blasts occurred on a busy shopping street in Drottninggatan, Sweden, in what is thought to be a car bomb and a suicide bomb. If this is confirmed, it will be the first suicide attack on Swedish soil.

Unofficial reports claim that the man suspected of perpetrating both explosions is Taimour Abdulwahab al-Abdaly, 29, an Iraqi-born Swede reported to have been living in Luton before the attack.

He is enlisted on Muslima, a Muslim dating website. Here he states he was born in Baghdad, but lived in Sweden from 1992 until migrating to the UK in 2001 to study.

A search warrant was issued under the Terrorism Act for a house in Bedfordshire last night.

No explosive materials or ingredients have been found, and Scotland Yard say that no arrests have been made.

The location of the house remains undisclosed by the police. A Home Office spokesperson declined to comment given the fact that the Swedish investigation is on-going.

Abdaly was the only person to die in the attacks, although two civilians were injured.
The Swedish PM Fredrik Reinfeldt described the events as “unacceptable”, saying; “Sweden is an open society… which has stated a wish that people should be able to have different backgrounds, believe in different gods… and live side by side in our open society.”
