Winner: Simon Cowell

By New Statesman

If you were to graph Simon Cowell’s influence on music over the last decade or so it would be a remorseless upward slope, ruler-straight and undeviating as he pursues his goal with robot intensity. What is his goal, exactly? Two possibilities suggest themselves. Either he is bent on extracting the secret of eternal life from pre-pubescent warbles and will go on harvesting annual clutches of teenage wannabes until he finds it; or, more prosaically, he’s set on full-spectrum dominance in the music industry and will not rest until every number one-selling artist is signed to SyCo records. Either way, his net worth was estimated at £165m on the Sunday Times Rich List this year, and he won’t be going anywhere for a while.
