Government publishes full guidance for leaving lockdown

By Samuel Horti

The government has published its full plan for leaving the coronavirus lockdown, which includes advice for people in England to wear homemade face coverings in enclosed spaces, including on public transport and in shops.

The document, available in full here, will be presented to parliament this afternoon before Prime Minister Boris Johnson holds a news conference at 7pm.

The document confirms that the government will publish new guidelines for making workplaces secure later this week. From Wednesday, people should travel to work if their workplace is open and they cannot work from home, and “sectors of the economy that are allowed to be open”, such as construction sites and manufacturing plans, “should be open”.

Other highlights from the guidance include:

– The government urging more vulnerable children, or children of key workers, to attend school in person.

– People can exercise outside as many times as they want from Wednesday, and may drive as far as they want for outdoor spaces.

– Those who are deemed “extremely clinically vulnerable” should continue to stay at home at all times and avoid any face-to-face contact.

– People can meet one other person from another household outside from Wednesday, provided they stay two metres apart.

– The government may allow two full households to meet up in a larger group from 1 June.

– Primary schools to reopen on 1 June, with the aim of every primary school child returning to school for a month before the summer break “if feasible”.

– Some non-essential businesses reopen from 1 June, while restaurants, pubs, haridressers and cinemas could open from 4 July.
