When Balls and Miliband clashed

Watch the pair exchange blows at the NS Labour leadership hustings.

By George Eaton

Ed Miliband may have just named Ed Balls as his new shadow chancellor (how could he not?) but the pair haven’t always enjoyed the warmest of relationships.

One memorable clash took place at the New Statesman Labour leadership hustings last June. After a particularly verbose answer from Balls, Miliband quipped: “It’s just like being back at the Treasury.” To which Balls humourlessly replied: “Tell us the answer then, Ed, like you always do.”
