The General Medical Council (GMC) has ruled that Dr Freddy Patel, the pathologist who initially examined the body of Ian Tomlinson following the G20 protests in April 2009, is guilty of misconduct.
Dr Patel concluded that Tomlinson died of natural causes after being pushed to the ground by a policeman. However, two other pathologists later found that his death was caused by internal bleeding resulting from his fall.
The GMC has considered three unrelated post-mortem examinations carried out by Dr Patel between 2002 and 2005. It has now ruled that his “fitness to practise is impaired” and found him guilty of misconduct. Last year, he was removed from the Home Office register of accredited forensic pathologists.
The GMC panel will announce either later today or tomorrow what sanctions it is to take against Dr Patel.
