A highly-placed Labour Party source tells me the police have had a mole in Downing Street for five months. Five months! There has been much speculation about whether John McTernan, the PM’s Director of Political Operations, has been talking. My source didn’t know whether it was, but was adamant about the existence of the mole and the length of time he (or she) has been cooperating with Scotland Yard. It must make for an odd working environment in Downing Street.
I rather hope it is Director of Government Relations Ruth Turner who has been talking. Everyone who has met her has only good things to say about her and several people I respect enormously have described her work before she went into Downing Street as inspirational. Many good people are rooting for her.
