Guardian First Book award shortlist announced

A biography of cancer and a 9/11 novel make the cut

The Guardian have just announced their First Book Award shortlist. The five titles on the list are:

Pigeon English, Stephen Kelman (Bloomsbury)
The Emperor of All Maladies, Siddhartha Mukherjee (Fourth Estate)
Down The Rabbit Hole, Juan Pablo Villalobos (And Other Stories)
The Collaborator, Mirza Waheed (Viking)
The Submission, Amy Waldman (William Heinemann)

You can read interviews with former New York Times reporter Amy Waldman and doctor Siddhartha Mukherjee on the New Statesman culture website. The final decision will be made by the judges (who include author Antonia Fraser and academic Sarah Churchwell) next month.
