Labour MP Harry Harpham dies aged 61

The Labour MP for Sheffield Brightside has died after a struggle against cancer.

By New Statesman

Harry Harpham, the Labour MP for Sheffield Brightside, has died following a battle with leukemia. He was 61.

Harpham, who entered the Commons for the first time in the 2015 election, was one of the last deep coal miners to enter Parliament, replacing David Blunkett, who had served as the MP for the seat since 1987. During the miners’ strike, he spent a year on strike. His final speech to the Commons called on David Cameron to do more to help the city of Sheffield following the collapse of Sheffield Forgemasters.
