The European Union’s medicines regulator has said it might take a full year before a coronavirus vaccine is ready.
The European Medicines Agency estimated it could take 12 months to get the vaccine “ready for approval and available in sufficient quantities to enable widespread and safe use”, the EU executive said a strategy paper published on Wednesday.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen had previously said a vaccine could be on the market “before autumn”.
Earlier today, the chief executive of GlaxoSmithKline, which is developing a vaccine alongside French pharmaceutical company Sanofi, said the world would need more than one Covid-19 vaccine, and so drug companies should partner up to speed up vaccine development.
