Jacqui Smith loses seat

The biggest scalp of the night?

By George Eaton

She became the poster girl of the expenses scandal, and now a tearful-looking Jacqui Smith has lost her Redditch seat to the Tories.

With a local majority of just 1,948, it was always going to be hard for her to hang on, but this is still a big scalp for the Conservatives. And few were expecting a swing of as large as 9.2 per cent to the Tories. For someone who rose to become the first female home secretary, this is quite a fall.
