Trump has “legitimised fear and hatred”
The US House of Representatives has voted to condemn Donald Trump’s attacks on Democratic congresswomen as racist. The US president prompted outrage after tweeting on Sunday that the ethnic minority women should “go back” to the “crime infested countries from which they came.” A resolution passed by 240 votes to 187 in the Democratic-controlled chamber denounced Trump for “racist comments that have legitimised fear and hatred of New Americans and people of colour”. Only four Republicans and independent Justin Amash, who recently left the party, joined all 235 Democrats in backing the move. Trump tweeted on Tuesday: “I don’t have a Racist bone in my body!” Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, one of the Democrats he targeted, replied: “You’re right, Mr. President — you don’t have a racist bone in your body. You have a racist mind in your head, and a racist heart in your chest.”
Zaghari-Ratcliffe transferred to Iranian psychiatric ward
Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, the British-Iranian woman jailed since 2016 in Tehran, has been admitted to a hospital psychiatric ward, her husband has said. The 40-year-old mother of one is reportedly being prevented from contacting relatives by Iran’s Revolutionary Guard. Earlier this month, Zaghari-Ratcliffe, along with her husband, went on hunger strike for 15 days in protest at her continuing detention.
EU elects first female commission president
Germany’s Ursula von der Leyen has been elected as the European Commission’s first female president since its creation 61 years ago. In a secret ballot, MEPs voted by 383 to 327 to confirm the former centre-right German defence minister as the successor to Jean-Claude Juncker. Von der Leyen, who will take office on 1 November, the day after the UK is due to leave the European Union, has said that she is open to Brexit being delayed further “for a good reason”.
Sixty four Labour peers denounce Corbyn over anti-Semitism
More than sixty Labour peers have put their names to an advertisement denouncing Jeremy Corbyn for “allowing anti-Semitism to grow in our party and presiding over the most shaming period in Labour’s history”. The advert, published in the Guardian and signed by former cabinet ministers including Peter Hain, Hillary Armstrong, John Reid and Peter Mandelson, stated: “The Labour Party welcomes everyone* irrespective of race, creed, age, gender identity, or sexual orientation. (*except, it seems, Jews). This is your legacy, Mr Corbyn.” In response, a Labour spokesman said that Corbyn and the party “stand in solidarity with Jewish people and are fully committed to the support, defence and celebration of the Jewish community”.
Brazilian police close down fake luxury car factory
Brazilian police have closed down a clandestine factory that was producing fake Ferraris and sham Lamborghinis. Officers said the cars were being offered on social media for $45,000 to $60,000 — a fraction of their usual price. A father and son who owned the workshop in the southern state of Santa Catarina have been arrested on industrial property charges.
