The regressive Pope, by the Boston Globe

Story behind Rome's assault on Canterbury

By James Macintyre

To anyone interested in the state of modern Christianity, the Roman Catholic Church, Anglicanism or, indeed, life itself, let me heartily recommend a read of this exceptional piece by James Carroll in the Boston Globe.

The “hook” for the article is the Vatican’s disgraceful mugging of Rowan Williams and his fragile Anglican Communion, but the essay delves much deeper than that. By describing the regression in Rome since the 1960s and the days of Vatican II, of which this move is a product, the piece acts as a definitive appeal for modern Christianity. I will leave it at that, as I am unable to put the Church’s plight into such eloquent — and important — words.
