Police: unaccountable thugs or admirable heroes?

Join the debate

By James Macintyre

The Police Federation’s in-house journal has very generously just published a guest article by me, arguing that the failure of successive governments to hold the force to account over its culture of cover-up, racism, thuggery and incompetence has let down both the British public and the police itself.

The piece is by way of an introduction to three fringe meetings, sponsored by the federation and which I will chair, at the party conferences in coming weeks. The subject for debate will be: “Should the public trust the police?”

I hope that if you can’t make it along, you’ll leave your verdict below.
