Self-awareness fail: anti-EU MEP harangues BBC journalist about why her job exists

Meet Janice Atkinson – irony personified.

By Media Mole

It’s funny really, because before today, everything your mole knew about Janice Atkinson – that she called a Thai-born constituent a “ting tong”, she was so bad even Ukip expelled her (for false expense claims), she was one of three British MEPs who voted against a ban on “gay conversion therapy”, and her Twitter banner picture includes her with far-right leaders Geert Wilders and Marine Le Pen – made her sound like a lovely person.

But it looks like Atkinson has sunk even lower – haranguing a BBC journalist for being appointed its first gender and identity correspondent.

On Tuesday morning, Atkinson decided to tweet the journalist, Megha Mohan, who had announced her promotion on Twitter, asking her personal details about the job:

“Could you let the UK taxpayers know 1. Your salary 2. How qualified you are for this role, particularly on ‘trans’ 3. Why you think your role is needed.”

Not satisfied with making the densest political point in the most aggressively personal way possible, Atkinson then wrote a near-identical message this morning – this time in response to Mohan’s tweet about protests against the Philippines President Duterte’s controversial war on drugs:

“As an elected MEP who speaks on behalf of taxpayers, could you answer my 2nd request: 1. What is your salary 2. What qualifications do you have to do this job? 3. Why is this post considered necessary?”

Rather ironic, from a politician who is ideologically opposed to the European Union but works as a Member of the European Parliament, to question the necessity and relevance of someone else’s job – and their qualification for it.

Also, as a Brexiteer, presumably she sees the EU as an undemocratic institution – so how can she possibly claim to represent taxpayers?

So your mole has a message for her:

“Dear Ms Atkinson, could you let the UK taxpayers know 1. Your salary (including expense claims) 2. How qualified you are for this role, particularly on ‘the EU’ 3. Why are you in this role if you think it’s not needed.”
