Tories select Laura Trott in Sevenoaks

The former Downing Street adviser will succeed Michael Fallon in one of the safest Conservative seats in the country.

By Patrick Maguire

Laura Trott, a former special adviser to David Cameron, has been selected as the new Conservative candidate in Sevenoaks, the New Statesman has learned.

Trott, who served as Cameron’s head of strategic communications in Downing Street, beat local councillor Graham Clack and former Peterborough MP Stewart Jackson in the contest to succeed Michael Fallon.

Sources at the selection said Jackson, whose pitch leant heavily on his record as an MP, was eliminated in the first ballot of members.

Trott then beat Clack in the second round. She is now as good as certain to succeed Fallon, who retired from the Commons last week, as MP. The Tory majority in 2017 was 21,917.
