Wyclef Jean in hiding as he awaits verdict on presidency bid

Rap star has allegedly received death threats and warnings to leave the country.

By New Statesman

Wyclef Jean has gone into hiding in Haiti as he awaits the official verdict on his eligibility for the presidency, following alleged death threats.

The rap-star remains in Haiti, in a secret location, despite intimidation from people who want him to leave the country. He did not offer details about who is responsible for the threats.

The announcement of candidates who meet the constitutional requirements to lead the country has been delayed until Friday.

It was due yesterday, but officials said that several unnamed candidates remained under review.

The 40-year-old ex-Fugees singer said that there had been questions about whether he met residency requirements. Presidential candidates must have been resident in Haiti for five consecutive years prior to standing.

Jean has lived in the US since he was a child, but claims that his role as ambassador-at-large for Haiti means that he is exempt from this rule.
