Exclusive: fire scare at Labour HQ

Party staff gather outside New Scotland Yard as fire engine arrives.

By James Macintyre

Breaking news:

All Labour Party staff have gathered on a green outside New Scotland Yard after a fire alarm went off inside the party headquarters on Victoria Street, central London, Newstatesman.com has learned.

A fire engine has just arrived on the scene. Party volunteers say there is “no sign of any smoke”, but one joked that they suspected “dirty tricks” from their political opponents. A volunteer said that the staff were “enjoying the fresh air” and a brief break from 24-hour election campaigning.

The incident comes after Liam Fox, the Tory shadow defence secretary, was forced to cancel a press conference at short notice early this morning after his home was broken into.
