For many in the US, New York state governor Andrew Cuomo’s lunchtime coronavirus briefings have become part of daily life. As the situation in the state – now the epicentre of the US’s outbreak – has worsened, Cuomo’s stock has risen, writes New Statesman special correspondent Sophie McBain in a wide-ranging profile that chronicles Cuomo’s rise from “Trump whisperer” to coronavirus-era icon.

“Cuomo’s handling of the pandemic has not only underlined his fundamental competence, his honesty, acumen and calm authority thrown into sharper relief by Trump’s blustering ineffectualness.
