Tube passenger numbers up nearly 9 per cent as people return to work

By Samuel Horti

Passenger numbers on the London Underground were up nearly 9 per cent compared to last week in the early hours of this morning, Transport for London has said.

From today, the government is encouraging people to return to work if they cannot work from home. It is advising people to avoid public transport whenever possible, but TfL said passenger numbers have risen on the Tube, when looking at the period between the service commencing and 6am.

The manager of Waterloo station also told PA that services were at 45 per cent of normal capacity on Monday, compared to 25 per cent in previous weeks. The station remains quiet, but footfall has risen from 5 per cent of the normal level in previous weeks to 7 per cent on Tuesday and around 10 per cent today.

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps has said transport networks can only afford to run at around a tenth of capacity while allowing passengers to maintain social distancing.
