What the papers are saying about the beleaguered defence secretary.

With the Prime Minister asking for the preliminary findings of an inquiry into Liam Fox's working relationship with Adam Werritty to be on his desk tomorrow morning, the position of the defence secretary looks precarious. This morning, the Observer produces video footage of Fox's meeting with the president of Sri Lanka last year at which Werritty was present, and which appears to contradict the defence secretary's earlier insistence that his friend and former flatmate had never attended any meetings with representatives of foreign governments.
The press pack has the scent of its quarry in its nostrils. Here's what the papers are saying about Mr Fox today.

Fox must be the shiftiest politician around; its all in his face. I wouldn't trust this man with a bargepole let alone a 2nd hand car.
But yesterdays footage was classic TV as Fox squirmed and his face dropped to the floor. Never has so much embarassment been seen since Twiggy defeated Portillo in Enfield Southgate. Classic. A moment to savour.
Once again Tory High Command make fundamental error of judgement. Whether anything was compromised by Fox inviting his friend into Westminster and to accompany him, it shows his arrogance that the rules don't apply to him.
If Liam Fox has done anything wrong he should go. something that would please David Cameron who has never liked this man, he would prefer John Redwood as defence secretary.
I am also sure George osborne and Mervyn King are pleased about the diversions-Last week we had the cat and now we have the fox!
There is also a bigger issue the world is in the biggest financial crisis ever and this is making headlines, and Labour have a cheek,what about there so many scandals,and even bigger scandals involving public life, and the biggest one of all involving the 38 Billion hole in the defence budget.
Also the two pompous Labour MP's Mann and Murphy (more Mann then Murphy who i quite like)
These two are insisting on an inquiry, both these men voted for the Iraq war and then voted strongly against an inquiry into the iraq war- The two faces of Labour! but as i said if in the wrong he should go and John Redwood would be brilliant.
As the plot thickens, I'm sure more discreditable things will be revealed about Fox. Typical Tories, back to their old routine of sleaze. If he's got the backing of Dave, then I'm pretty certain Fox's days are numbered; he may not even make Monday's Questions in the House.
And isn't it time we had a woman SoS for Defence? Theresa would look good in a flak jacket.

Flashman will be only to happy to throw Neo Con Fox under the bus?, the problems he`s caused him with leaks ie; defence spending, payback time me thinks, Flashman can get his "special advisor" Steve Hilton to put an arm around Fox`s shoulder then shove him into another room where a friendly bit of persuasion should ensure Fox`s demise!!, nevermind, Fox can get his mate to get him a job in the arms trade?, earn himself a few bob from selling death and misery to a few despots to whom he`s befriended!!!.
I'm not a fan of conspiracy theories but it seems to me that someone who hates gays is at work yet again.

Paul Staines is a convicted drink-driver. He made the false allegation that there was a secret second server at No10 and has never retracted that.
I'm convinced that there are at least 4 closets in the Cabinet. When and if they choose to come out is obviously their choice but the sooner the better. At least Alan Duncan was honest in this respect, and they should follow his example. Labour doesn't have a problem with this. Angela Eagle is pretty open about her lifestyle. She's had a substantial makeover and has since been appointed to the Shadcab.
A 'drink driving' offence is not exactly First Degree Murder.

Haven't you forgotten the little detail of the fiddled expenses? Playing the 'gay card' or any other card is always a slimey little thing to do.
It was indeed a "slimey little thing to do". When he was outed by whoever and it became clear that James Lundie was his boyfriend, then he became vulnerable on the expenses issue.
If his landlord had been anybody else, he would still be Chief Secretary to the Treasury.
Who is hunting Fox? Is it the people with whom the far more traditionally Tory David Cameron and William Hague have encircled him at the MoD? Apart from the Lib Dem Eurosceptic Nick Harvey, more than on record against Trident, I do not know about Peter Luff, but Gerald Howarth is late of the European Arab Bank, Andrew Robathan has been on his travels courtesy of CMEC (Nicholas Soames, Hugo Swire, Crispin Blunt, Alan Duncan, Commons receptions to celebrate Norouz, you get the idea), and Lord Astor is actually CMEC's Vice-Chairman. Or is it Luke Coffey, and thus indicative of the realist renaissance and resurgence within American intelligence? Both, one trusts.
Still, be in no doubt. Fox and his CIA SpAd have a much-trailed scheme to abolish all three Armed Forces in favour of something like the United States Marine Corps, except in no sense an elite force, as part of the single EU defence "capability" under overall American command. It should never be forgotten that an absolute ban on Germany's having an Air Force was written into the Treaty of Versailles. To be deprived of this right by one's vanquishers is one of the great historic indicators that defeat has tipped over into humiliation.
But back in the days when New Labour was led by Tony Blair and the other lot by Michael Howard, deeply disillusioned former Cabinet Ministers from both sides implored me not to write, even in jest, that our most unaccomplished 16-year-olds should be conscripted directly into the Israeli Defence Force, on the grounds that "if the wrong person reads that, then it will happen". They were not joking. (I was later informed that, entirely independently, something very near to that IDF scheme was seriously considered within the Blair inner circle. That was how far beyond satire things had moved in the last days of Tony Blair.) That, at least, will not happen under Liam Fox. Progress of a sort, perhaps. And it certainly will not happen under whoever is being lined up as his successor.
American intelligence, preparing for a more-or-less isolationist Republican nominee against an Obama who could therefore be truer to his own instincts in that direction, meets the age-old Arabism and doubts about any "Atlantic Bridge" in High Toryism and, shall we say, its wider subculture.
So the plates start to move, and Liam Fox falls to a crushing end as they do.
Still, at least we have found a Mr Humphries to the Mrs Slocombe of Theresa May and her pussy.
The whole idea was that NATO troops, and British military units in particular, should not be put into North Africa as a ground force. A Blitzkrieg coupled with Libyan anti-Gaddafi factions was expected to do the job. The grasp of recent history displayed by some Tories is also in some doubt. The Desert Fox was Field-Marshall Rommel. In fact, Monty led the Desert Rats. Friends of Liam have been busily pointing out this misconception.
Neither was this friend of Liam's acting as a body double let alone a human shield. This friend has the stature for such a role - but no, his function has yet to be ascertained.
And all this talk about Liam being a carpet-bagger is nothing but sheer rubbish.
The prognosis is not good but give the blither a chance.

Interesting. Could it all be a CIA plot? Or a storyline from Spooks.
Fox looked pretty uncomfortable stepping out from his Office yesterday, to apologise Insincerity written all overhis face.
But Fox is right is proposing some kind of amalgamation of all 3 Services and a EDF, but not so sure about selling it out to the Americans. Their interests are not always Britains interests.
Somehow Britainhas to take a stronger lead in Europe and keeping the peace there.
So exactly how does this non official, official aide earn his living? Is he Mr Fox's bit on the side....oh the Fox give him time to explain says David, and whilst your waiting turn in a few illegal immigrants ,,,really..... Well Mr Fox we normal Joe's get this warning ""You do not have to say anything. But it may harm your defence if you do not mention when questioned something which you later rely on in court. Anything you do say may be given in evidence."" , which indicates that the system thinks YOU DON'T need time to tell the TRUTH.
Lets wait and see what new revelations the Sunday Papers bring up. Shame on the Tories for supporting him. And shame on Dave playing for time hiding behind an Enquiry. It'll be Xmas before anything gets done about Fox.
