Tony Blair calls for regime change in Iran and Syria

"Regime change in Tehran would immediately make me more optimistic about the whole of the region."

It looks like Tony Blair is up to his old tricks. The former prime minister has given an interview to the Times (£) to mark the ten-year anniversary of the attacks of 11 September 2001, which kick-started the disastrous wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, he expresses no regret for the countless lives lost, or his responsibility for the shortsightedness that led Britain into a decade of apparently endless war. No, instead, he holds Iran accountable for continuing the wars and calls for regime change:

Regime change in Tehran would immediately make me significantly more optimistic about the whole of the region.

If Iran were to acquire nuclear weapons capability, it would destabilise the region very, very badly.

They continue to support groups that are engaged with terrorism and the forces of reaction. In Iraq, one of the main problems has been the continued intervention of Iran and likewise in Afghanistan.

He also called on the international community to hasten the departure of the Syrian president, Bashar al-Assad, saying:

He is not going to lead the programme of change in Syria now. He has shown he is not capable of reform. His position is untenable. There is no process of change that leaves him intact.

Blair, who is international peace envoy for the Middle East, emphasised that he was not calling for military action in Iran but, given his record, he might be better off not mentioning regime change at all.

Tony Blair is a liar and a murderer - one dy, he will be tried as a criminal who was responsible for supplying weapons to Tyrant rulers in Middle East, killing innocent men, women and children in Iraq, Afghanistan, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and many other parts of globe.

If these Thugs had the power, they would have already attacked Iran... They do not have the guts or the spine..

Flashbuck - er, look mate, I made a cogent clarification as to why most of us despise Blair, and why every word he utters is like unto a turd dropping - kersplash - into our morning cuppa. So sorry it didnt fill you with effervescing joie de vivre, but clearly you're looking for something else in comments from your enemies, in whose ranks I am glad to be. Stay frosty.

My god you people are stupid. Go and read some of Orwell's essays, or something on international relations... Just learn something... Anything. Jesus.

I am guessing from all the comments that most agree that a dictator in charge of a country is what you would like? Oh we need more democracy in this country, end of the house of lords, a republic, more devolved power (all I agree with), but democracy for countries in the middle east is not right? How frickin racist. Another example of how the west has totally lost its way! We don't want another Iraq? Sort of means we don't want to depose another dictator. I used to be proud to be left wing. I still am. What has happened to the rest of you?

People LIke Tony Blair and other Western-IZED politicians - contrary to their claims - have no respect for the lives of their people - they send people to war to create feuds and establishing blood-based hatred.

Soldiers who are attacking and people being killed are victims of propaganda, brutality, viciousness and greed by these politicians.

I have no enemies - as long as dialogue is my way and we share this value... The only common enemy we have are those who resort to violence but not to logic...

I couldn't agree [with Blair] more.

Now Tony has really lost it.
Ok he is the self apponted Peace Envoy from a ME Foundation which he set up to give him something to do in retirement, but we wish he would stop meddling because he'll ony make things worse.
But trust the Press to pick up the odd remarks he makes and blow them out of all proportion.
The only solution to the ME is One Palestine and the Regional Powers Iran Syria and Iraq, determinng their own future. And it should be a no interference area for the West.

What a despicable scum he is. The worst traitor and liar known to humanity has the temerity to ask for regime change after he illegally invaded Iraq promising that he was not after regime change in that country. Bush's rent boy is now looking to become a full time whore and available to anyone willing to pay for his services.

So He's not calling for military action? Hmmm. He does have form on that though, so copious amounts of salt of to be taken there then.

Thank Christ no one pays much attention to him anymore.

The man is not well.He is a sick war monger nothing more nothing less.

Off his chump, totally and profoundly.

Please starve this lunatic (Blair) the oxygen of publicity. The man clearly has toys in the attic.

I wonder if he has ever faced gunfire? I'm talking about the Great Masturbator.

Why is anybody not wearing a white coat or a judges frock still listening to this pathological liar?

Interesting theory blaming the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan on Iran. I was always under the impression that it was the US and UK that were the instigators of these conflicts.

Tony Balir says: “If Iran were to acquire nuclear weapons capability it would destabilise the region very, very badly.”

Destabilise? How about a nuclear war? Surprisingly, not many seem to realize that when it comes to Iran then the doctrine of mutual assured destruction which had prevented a nuclear war from erupting during the Cold War is now dead. Nobody seems to take any notice of what one of the leading scholars of Islam, Bernard Lewis, said: “ With these people, with their apocalyptic mindset, mutual assured destruction is not a deterrent, it is an inducement”. Why is that? MAD is Dead: http://madisdead.blogspot.com/

So TB is wrong? Much better to allow the Islamofascists in Iran to carry on stoning their women to death and hanging teenage boys from cranes for being Gay. And if they acquire nuclear weapons and pass these on to terrorists who blow up Washington or London we can then just say its radicalised moslems just a bit upset about kashmir, palestine, iraq and everything else that upsets the!!! Yea right. Spineless Obama and Cameron should give the islamofascists a deadline: stop trying to develop nuclear weapons or we will bomb you.

Flashbuck: Genius!!

If not for the innocent civilians then the guilt of sending "our boys and girls" ought to weigh heavy enough on his conscience for Blair to shut up. Those that support him need to put their money where their mouth is and sign up to build that car park they're so keen on. Blair and his kind's philosophy is "your with us or against us" so either have the courage to join up to fight these wars of aggression or speak up against them but dont let the spikes hurt your ass sitting somewhere in between. That's just cowardly and chickens are of no use to anyone but Colonel Sanders.

Gordon's picture

Indeed, bLiar is right. Lets send him with all the arms he needs along with all those who think war is fun.

@capt-price

Genious is a bit of a stretch.

Mildly amusing at best.

Regime change in Terhan is surely something that few would not consider desirable. So why bash Blair for his comments? The blinckered Blair haters miss the point every time. I believe the majority of people in Iran would approve too.

The Western/NATO Intervention is about keeping STATUS QUO - by changing the dictators ... that USUALLY the West has backed or installed ... supplanting them with their democratic stooges... Pakistan is the best Example of this.

Iran is a thorn in Western side because they have challenged the Western ideas about Democracy and asserted an independent path.

West's CONCERNS about Syria are about aiding Israel than about Democracy - otherwise, the British Govt. would not be selling arms to Bahraini/Saudi Dictators - as we speak...

I spend a decade calling for regime change in the UK when Mr Blair was in charge.

If Blair was so concerned about Iran why on earth did he support the invasion of Iraq, which has increased Iran's influence in the region considerably.

'Flashbuck' writes, "The only language they will understand is a massive whack job." The only people whio write this kind of warmongering hate-speak are those who themselves don't understand language, or its misuse by warmongering deceivers like Blair.
It's a simple psychological device called projection: 'Flashbuck' is guilty of what he accuses others.

Andy's picture

Gibberish - Blair isn't advocating war. He's explicit about that. Regime change in Iran and Syria would be a good thing - no? Authoriarian regime that murders civilians and executes women for driving, or a democratic one?

This is just another excuse to do some Blair baiting. It's easy to rail against war and intervention when your families aren't being tortured and shot.

Nathaniel Myers's picture

My god... How fucking stupid are you people? You think Blair is 'off his rocker' for promoting regime change, not military intervention (which may become a necessity in the near future), in two of the most backward, sexist, fascist, repressive, disgusting and dangerous regimes, in the world?

You guys are fucking nuts. Get off your pathetic high horses, read some George Orwell, LISTEN to what Tony is ACTUALLY saying and attempt to engage your brain and form a reasonable opinion.

willoyen's picture

the Israelis must be laughing behind the peace envoy's back, with glee that they've got a more than half-mad, megalomaniac who's on their side, this time. He'll do and say anything they want, and remain deluded that he is a great 'statesman'; like some of the posters here, who are equally deluded to think in their limited world-view that 'we', in our self importance and sad impotence have the power, and even the right to change any regimes which displease 'us'. An antidote to this ignorance might be to read John Gray's article in this NS.

willoyen's picture

BTW, is the photo of Hitler mimicking Blair, or Blair mimicking Hitler?

Coleridge's picture

Why do the islamists and their supporters think that 200,000 Iranians have fled Islamo-fascist Iran and entered the UK as political refugees? Why have over 3 million fled to the US and Canada? Ahmadenejad's fascist regime has no right to exist.

Hugh Markey's picture

Surely Gordon Brown and his backers have more experience of 'regime change'.
Just ask Tony Blair and the Murdoch press!
Iran and Syria's political structures will probably collapse. Then the Middle-East's crucial problem, Israel, will no longer be able to use Western camouflage to avoid getting its act together.

Divide and Rule Suckers

mike cobley's picture

The stalwart Defenders of Tony are missing the point. Its not a new, open regime in Tehran we object to - its hearing this coming out of the mouth of Tony Blair, noted warmonger and crass charlatan. When warmongers (Blair, Bush, Cameron, etc) gurgle on about regime change, you know that this is code for trashing a country and plundering its assets. Got it?
