The public want tasers and tear gas used on the rioters

And 33 per cent want them shot with live ammunition.

While some MPs anguish over whether the police should be allowed to use rubber bullets and water cannon, it's worth noting that the public wants an even fiercer response. Here are some findings from today's YouGov poll on the riots:

- In common with Conservative MEP Roger Helmer, 33 per cent of the public believe the police should be allowed to shoot the rioters with live ammunition.

- 78 per cent support the use of tear gas.

- 72 per cent support the use of tasers.

- 82 per cent want curfews imposed.

- 90 per cent support the use of water cannon.

- 65 per cent support the use of plastic bullets.

These survey results are sick and sad but unsurprising. It's the job of society's leaders and the older generation in general, to keep its youth gainfully occupied and provide opportunities for growth that give them a real expectation that they will be fully functional members of a productive community.

So it's not surprising that those who have utterly failed in that responsibility because they didn't understand the responsibility in the first place now see violence as the answer. This facile resort to violence has been a feature of government foreign policy since Blair took office and now a violent society's neglect of its own responsibilities at home is being exposed.

In the same way that violence didn't work in Iraq, Afghanistan and Libya, it won't work at home. Solutions to problems like this should exercise the mind. It's testimony to the primordial condition of mankind that a so-called developed nation when faced with a collapsing society cannot summon its imagination and intellect to find answers. The editor of the nation's leading daily newspater no less, unequivocally rejected the need or desire to understand what is going on last night in an appearance on Newsnight. If you want to understand what's really wrong with Britain you need look no further than Kelvin McKenzie and the entire establishment as they rant about the need to bring the rebellious youth to heel with force.

The public don't necessarily have an informed opinion. If you look at some of footage, on the streets you had a mixture of those attacking the police or looting and those who were there for the spectacle.

Using indiscriminate techniques risks turning the bystanders into rioters. The lesson was eventually learnt in Northern Ireland that there's nothing like CS gas to set a whole crowd against the police.

A. Cole: surely the problem IS that the only language these kids know is aggression? I'm no Christian but they sure have one thing right that an eye for an eye never solved anything.

Anyone supporting the use of live ammunition is an immoral person.

Dickie1's picture

I echo the disgust at the idea of using live rounds. We are spending millions of pounds bombing regimes for opening fire on their own citizens. It is wild talk with no place in the mainstream. Police in numbers did the job it seems; rational and proportionate.

Ivan Miletitch's picture

Proportionate ? You're kidding aren't you .... had it been 'proportionate' we wouldn't have had 4 nights of it!

I want to know the stats by neighbourhood. We all know the rich want real bullets. But what about the rest

Yeah, the 'yoof' really are going to listen to Darcus Howe- you would have as much success if you disinterred CLR James.

Stupid, stupid bigots out there.
1. Tasers can't be used against groups, only individuals
2. Using live ammo -> people retaliating by shooting police
3. Curfew -> vigilantes jailed -> tabloid outcry
4. Water cannon: useless against mobile crowds
5. Tear gas: didn't stop anything in France in 2005, or Greece in 2009. People would wear gas masks, making identification harder. Also, tear gas was used in Hackney
6. Plastic bullets: useless except at fairly close range, only a few know how to use them and they wouldn't be in the right place; risk of 2) if someone was killed.

These right-wing fools don't realise they're starting the whole problem. The bigots start a social war with their police brutality, murders by police, impunity for police, CCTVs, ASBOs, stop and search, and all the other atrocities, backed up by forcing people into crime by taking away education and benefits. Then they whine about the fact that the people they're waging social war against start to fight back, and aren't all that careful about what targets they choose (because you haven't earned their respect). "OMG THEY BURND MEI KAR HERP DERP SHOOOOT EVRY1 LOLOLOL". Here's the thing: the bigots started the war, they need to start the ceasefire - else there won't be peace, there'll be more of the same. Let's begin with an amnesty for the 'rioters', since there's so many mitigating circumstances. This is your choice: peace now, and give up your bigotry, or keep up your current path and dig your own grave - this unrest will happen again and again.

PS: if a Muslim says "shoot them all" they go to jail. If a white bigot says "shoot them all" they get ignored, not even censored on news sites, and 33% public approval. So much for equality before the law.

Dickie1's picture

Ivan. No, I'm not. It would have been proportionate had had the people in charge come back off holiday and done it earlier. Wouldn't you say?

Flashbuck, I hope those guns under the counter registered to a resposible user.

Like I said, wild talk.

RJD is the only comment above which is worth reading. The rest is to the level of the "Daily Mail". If these stats are true, then the myth that Britain is a tolerant, reasonable, fair-minded society can finally be debunked.
As RJD says, this is a warning that this society is in free fall.If we, as a nation, cannot come up with an intelligent discourse about what we do about it and if our only response is the use of guns on our own population, we are in serious trouble indeed.
The idea that we can dismiss the whole thing under "criminality" and blow away all these criminals show how thin the veneer of "civilization" really is.What next? cutting of hands for the looters?
If these young people are all criminals, surely the question to ask is : why and how do we have so many young criminals among us? how is this society producing so many kids who think nothing of breaking into shops and looting them?
If we don't ask that question, this country is doomed. Judging from the comments above, I am very pessimistic.

Melanie Simms's picture

RJD you make an excellent point! Its time people pay attention to their own actions and how they have contributed to this terrible outcry.
I feel sorry for the people however who are getting harmed - the innocent bystanders who had nothing to do with the rioters hardships; they should be focusing their anger via an organized non-violent protest; unfortunately they feel so disenfranchised they see violence as the only outcome. Thats dangerous, when people feel that unempowered. England hasnt seen the last of this. Unfortunately its rising here in the US, and its already in many other nations-- simply google riots around the world... not looking forward to it when things get bad in my own country as well. Hoping leadership can face up to its own ugly part in this, and start to look into the deeper reasons for the massive rioting and begin finding solutions immediately.

ELIAKIM's picture

1. Cameron speaks of a 'culture of fear'. Who created that culture? Governments. Who impose that culture? The Police

2. The first riot was a natural combustion. Due to an innocent man being murdered by police. And its looking more like a frame up everyday.

3. Gaddafi threatened the UK a few months ago that he would send his bees and locusts to sting the UK.

4. It is a biblical prophecy for these last days of the end times.

5. It was also predicted by Nostradamus.

Basically, due to the hard tactics of the police force, it forced the community to get stronger and stronger to the point of dauntlessness.

When you have nothing, no future, no opportunity. 2 out of every three jobs going to immigrants. On top of being bullied by police and government henchmen. The day comes when the community simply explodes like it did in India. It took Gandhi to go on a hunger strike to put a stop to it.

The fact of the matter is that the police have no respect for the communities that they police. Everyone is a criminal in their eyes.

Now people are guilty and have to go to court to prove their innocence. When I was growing up it was the opposite.

Everyone as a responsibility Melanie, everyone as allowed this country to go to pot. Everyone allowed Brown to sell the countries gold and allowed him to get away with introducing over 100 stealth taxes.

The people of this country have to wake up.

Its going on all over the world. Welcome to the Aquarian Age of nonconformity. The fact of the matter is that governments do not have the solutions and there is far too many stakeholders that wish to keep the status quo in place.

This youth know that the big corporations are not paying taxes, they were more knowing then most people give them credit for.

It was Obama that was saying 'Yes, we can', now they think its yes we can to everything".

When government leaders are lawless and make war with other nations, what message does that give to the youth of today?

Last but not least this is known in Europe as the Ramadan Riots.

The greatest losers from these riots is the political-left. Quite frankly very few are prepared to listen to the lefts excuses anymore regarding criminality. Watching Harriet Harman on News-Night was quite nauseating she is everything that is wrong with modern progressive politics.

looks like you're all the same over there, whether you're young or old, employed or not, rich or poor, black or white, You'd all resort to aggression and ego. What you don't have, you'll just take, and when you do have, you'll do just about anything to keep it. Time you lot learn from the poor Malay boy that made youtube, he didn't fight back, he took it on the chin and walked on like Ghandi would have. Be grateful for the prosocial laws you enjoy, if kids went out on an orgy of thieving and destruction in Malaysia, the police would have them kneel down and blow a hole straight through there faces and tear gas the living crap out of their grannies. Enjoy what little freedom and respect you have left, if the children of the poor need to grab what they cant have, afford them their moment to enjoy. The police were very sporting, hats off to them. And as for some of the above comments.. holyshit new statesman, your readership has regressed, shame on you, or is it just a reflection of the state of the new British mind.. MALNOURISHED!

Tazers have a maximum range of 30 foot, there has to be two police when one is used, if someoens got a gun or petrol bomb when they are used then the police have to within reason, First make sure the gun isnt' pointing at someone indescriminatley

there's no suching as Tear gas, IT's CS Spray a liquid not a vapor

I would much rather hear what the political-left have to say than those of the reactionary right. Those on the right seem happy to bury their collective heads in the sand over the cause of the riots and are all to happy to condemn and seek retribution.

it is only on the left that I have found anyone willing to search for answers as to why an underclass has been created and to why that underclass are now indulging in lawless, wanton destruction and selfish looting.

A. Cole's picture

Gordon

The left are wrong on this one. The rioters have been identified as students, teachers, hairdressers and grammar school girls....this is not representative of the so-called 'underclass'.

Marcus's picture

Surely the answer is automatic conscription into the Army for 16-21 year olds who are either outside of the education system, or without a job for more than 6-months.

This will give them genuine self-respect, teach them discipline, give them prospects, offer hope and they will also earn money, contribute to society and be removed from gangland, their Xboxes and their often unhappy lives at home.

Why is this not being actively discussed?

You can get people to agree with almost anything. A pointless exercise.

Sista Resista's picture

It is sickening that more violence is being called for when it is the systematic political and economic violence enacted on these communities that is the true cause of the rioting.

We need community leaders who are willing to help guide our youth away from rioting and to organising instead. We would like to see people like Darcus Howe involved in this capacity, lending support to the disaffected youth.

Now is the time to unite on the side of justice, not to perpetrate further injustice with the torture and cold-blooded murder of young people who have expressed their anger at their conditions

www.sistersofresistance.org

A. Cole's picture

You cant reason with these rioters. They are not afraid of losing an argument. After all their actions are indefensible.

Aggression is the only language these scum understand. The rights of the citizens whose homes and businesses are threatened must prevail over these degenerates.

A. Cole's picture

Sista Resista

Darcus Howe represents all that is wrong with the black community. He is an absent father with a love of violence.

Darcus should have been deported long ago to the decadent island from which he came.

How about the use of sound or taser cannons?

Allie's picture

Just goes to show that a goodly proportion of the public want their heads examined. Only a short step from that sort of thing to full scale civil war. And innocent people *would* be caught in the crossfire - you can absolutely guarantee.

gerry's picture

i agree - lets all use taser and water cannon on the cops (sorry, the filth) and maybe they'll get off their lazy arses and start earning their taxpayer funded megabucks. Genius!

Barnaby's picture

A. Cole and Crutchbender are, I hope, just trying to provoke. Sista Resista its all well and good considering the causes, but what is to be done while the riots are happening. Is it OK for the police just to stand by and watch? These weren't 3 year olds having a temper tantrum. They were burning people out of their homes and destroying peoples lives. They had to be stopped.

David Clough's picture

Attached is a video evidencing just how stupid and insipid and putrid black politics is in the UK.

Darcus Howe - note how his argument is that black boys are s and s'd by the beasts, and therefore this is political/ideological! Note also how he invokes the laudably and more obviously political motivations behind the Brixton riots of the 80s to support the criminality taking place. Note that he sentimentalises the whole thing by talking about his family members, and that he uses the word 'negro' to describe himself!

An argument which says a political problem for a certain community exists and that this necessarily means that devilry committed by that same community is of course political is specious and unfounded and crap!

Noting a resemblance between one patently political riot and another evidently moronic one, a resemblance in concrete form I.e. car-burnings and killed coppers, is not the same thing as deducing that therefore they have the same, abstract, ideological and theoretical motivation!

And if the black community wish to move out of slavery and enslavement (and with it the slave-mentality once coerced upon them and latterly subtly imbued in them) then it is up to them to also stop using the language of slavery!
They cannot appropriate the lexicon of racial hatred in the hope of eliminating its disgusting and viscous background of hatred!

This is not a revolution. This is disorder, albeit - in a highly convoluted and distorted way - disorder given voice and meaning by the real suffering and inequity experienced by them.

Disorder doesn't automatically mean anti-status quo - have Trotsky's and Lenin's action during the counter revolution stood the ethical test of time just because they replaced a repulsive order of patronage and privilege with something equally terrifying but different? The Tahliban - freedom fighters? I think not.

Where did the thieves and looters go? They stayed away from the arch-institutions of political power, and went to Foot Locker! The Viscy regime insurgent resistance targeted train lines, political figures, venomous officiados of the Holocaust and vitriolic, hate-filled rounder-uppers of innocent Jews and communists! What does the Black British 'equivalent' do? Target trainers, Nike sports shops and meaningless, petty police officers who never make it home to their families.

Meanwhile, and this my friend is the most sinister part of all, our cultural climate of utter intolerance of healthy and open debate over there being an actual, discernible difference between black Caribbean youths and Africans, Chinese BBCs and Indian Asians, Pakistani Kashmiri bad boys and Bangladeshi first-generation peasants, manages to pour gushes of petrol on the fires of racial hatred in Lancashire, Yorkshire and the Midlands. The beneficent effect this will have on the BNP in the North - TV screens, ironically, help people to make political decisions easier than when one is a Londoner eye-witness - is going to be huge!

Enjoy, and I hope it doesn't make you as angry as it has me!

What should we have done when David Cameron and his gang (better known as the Bullingdon Club) of thugs went round smashing up restaurants for Fun.

Let them face the rule of Law. No of course not. It was acceptable that their rich fathers, used their millions to pay for the damage and the clean up.

Pot, Black.

In other words - Hobbesian suppression of the beastliness and brutishness of these thugs is needed! They are not 'alienated' - they are aliens! Because they have nothing by way of respect for human life! P.s. will somebody, please, finally mention who this started over? Whose death was so indignating that silly kids kicked off? A gangster criminal, that's who.

David's picture

Its a pretty boring and predictable list of what should be permitted. How about withdrawl of the protection of PACE and Human Rights legislation for those on the streets and the banning of Channel 4's Street Summer programs - as obviously the mainstream media's bowing down to "youth" culture has been to no ones benefit.

Drew's picture

I'm sure plenty of these people also think poor people and teenagers are lazy (probably black people too). No doubt self-selection bias going on as well (the people who completed the survey properly or agreed to complete it are probably more likely to have a very strong opinion about the riots). The survey is also extremely biased towards producing this particular result. Where is the option for "I think our messed-up, corrupt, destructive socio-economic paradigm is the underlying cause of the problem". The most selected option is 'criminal behaviour' for the cause of the riots.... Who would have thought criminal behaviour would be behind rioting? I'm speechless. I really hope my tax contributions did not pay someone to produce that tripe. What an utter waste of time and money.

sistaresista - how delightfully naive and splendidly silly you sound! Do take a look at the criminal and yardie history of the gentleman whose death is supposed to be the motivating factor in all this.
