Labour leadership candidates prepare for a summer ceasefire
But will it hold?
By James Macintyre Published 21 June 2010 15:43Word reaches me that the five Labour leadership candidates are discussing plans to hold a "ceasefire" in August, in which they would all observe a pause in activity, and allow themselves time to rest.
This seems sensible, given the hectic programme of daily hustings and the length of the campaign, which culminates in September and which -- in terms of exhaustion levels -- must make the general election campaign pale into insignificance.
The question, however, is whether the ceasefire will hold, or whether one or more of the candidates will continue briefing, or use the quiet period to stage a dramatic stunt. We shall see.

To those of us looking in on the Labour Party from outside, the leadership campaign seems to be hardly active anyway.
Apart from Dianne Abbot, it is difficult to see what fundamental difference it will make who is elected leader.
Labour needs to ask itself, if it is to become a credible alternative Government, some much more difficult questions than which Westminster insider is to be the leader. It does not seem to be showing any signs of facing up to this task.
