Forget Osborne. It was Miliband's afternoon.

Forget the Budget. As the IPPR's Will Straw pointed out on Twitter:
What a waste of an hour. Nothing in the #Budget that hadnt been leaked.
Indeed. The Hugh Dalton era is well and truly over. George Osborne stood at the despatch box, with his glass of water, and performed a glorified version of a TV-news-channel paper review, confirming the various leaks and briefings to the press - from the cut in the top rate of tax to the increase in the tax allowance. But there was no still no sign of a stimulus package; no plan for growth. The Osborne slump continues.
The economics, therefore, took a backseat to the politics. This was, after all, yet another test for Ed Miliband. How would he perform? What would he say? How would he sound? The coalition's bizarre decision to slash the popular 50p top rate of tax, in particular, presented the leader of the opposition with an open goal - and, this time, he didn't miss. He looked - and sounded - confident; his opponents, the Prime Minister and the Chancellor, looked exasperated and annoyed as they sat and listened.
Miliband had facts:
What did the Chancellor say in August last year about America's more balanced deficit plan:
"Those who spent the whole of the past year telling us to follow the American example need to answer this simple question: why has the US economy grown more slowly than the UK economy?"
Mr Deputy Speaker, the numbers are in.
And the Chancellor is plain wrong.
The US economy grew at 1.7% last year, twice the rate of ours.
This Government have run out of excuses.
He had outrage:
Under his tax cut, a banker earning five million pounds will get an extra £240,000 a year.
Let's call this what it really is:
The Government's very own bankers' bonus.
He had humour:
It is great to support the great British success stories like Downton Abbey.
A tale of a group of out of touch millionaires.
Who act like they're born to rule.
But turn out to be no good at it.
Sound familiar Mr Deputy Speaker?
We all know it's a costume drama.
They think it's a fly on the wall documentary.
My own favourite gag/trick was when the Labour leader asked members of the coalition cabinet, seated opposite him, to raise their hands if they would be personally benefiting from the cut in the 50p top rate of tax. It was a cheap shot - but it hit home. Millionaire ministers shifted uneasily in their seats; some - I'm looking at you William Hague and George Young! - looked away and pretended not to hear. "Just nod," proclaimed Miliband, deploying a favourite put-down of the Prime Minister to great effect.
It was, in my view, a brilliant speech - especially given how difficult and awkward it is for leaders of the opposition to respond to Budget statements in the Commons, at such short notice. One friend of Miliband told me: "We were pretty pleased." Well, that's an understatement! Another source close to the Labour leader said the speech was a "group effort" but that "Ed and Torsten [Henricson-Bell, Miliband's economics adviser and the Labour Party's new director of policy] get most credit" for writing it. If only his conference speech had been delivered with such gusto. . .
The former Labour minister and ardent Blairite, George Foulkes, who backed David Miliband in the 2010 leadership contest, tweeted:
Ed Miliband has delivered the best Budget response I have heard from Opposition Leaders in 33 years in Parliament.
Brother David joined the tributes, with this brief tweet:
Excellent Budget response by Ed
The pessimists and defeatists on the Labour front and backbenches should take note not just of the dismal failure of the coalition's austerity measures - which some of the more right-wing among them would like to ape and emulate - but also their leader's bravura performance this afternoon. Yes, I admit: they are few and far between; far too few for my liking. But Miliband can do it. So, as I've said before, give him a chance.

@ B Green
You could have added that he seems to attract the worst type of characters to make comment, bringing down the status of the magazine.
Totally right mate. Mehdi Hasan is a biased eejit :P
And whats this about "consumer site of the year"? Last time I heard, the New Statesman was bailed out by a RICH leftie because nobody bought it except for teachers (especially ones in the sociology departments) and libraries. Also, consumer implies captalism. Against your principles people!!
@Anthony. Just in case you don't see the racism. I have replaced a few nouns to help you.
I see your fellow Christians have been up to there usual tricks in Norway ! But hey, the poor little souls are just misunderstood ain't they Anthony?
Have I missed something here? did you not watch the interviews with the people? Business people said the budget although not perfect for them gave them the incentive to HIRE more staff because of the tax breaks. More incentive to start a business. Surely this is a good thing?
My only concern is that this budget like many after it will lay out the foundations for a better Britain in the long term, we are hoping for a better britain in a decade's time and whats wrong with that? with the mess Labour left behind we have lost a generation already.
However, fuel duty to be reduced etc its a shame really because that would alone have sent out a powerful message.
Fighting? More like floundering! It was embarrassing to watch.
I think you should just get it over and join the Labour Party Mr Hasan. You would make a much better political tribalist and campaigner than you do a journalist. Journalism demands balance, of which you display strikingly little
I agree,Mehdi. A good, knockabout performance by Ed with some excellent jokes: I particularly liked the nod or shake your head - turning the tables on Cameron. I also wonder how long it will take to winkle out the details of Gideon's tax avoidance: obviously there in spite of his synthetic repugnance.
Ah, Mehdi.
You can fool all of the people some of the time - you can fool Liebore supporters ALL of the time !
mehdi, this was stupid. Milliband already knew everything coming, hardly surprising he had some good lines waiting. Even most Grannies could have done as good a job - and most i've known a far better one. His insincerity gets worse the harder he tries, and he *really* doesn't care - after all, he has identical economic policies.
miliband didn't pick up on the lack of growth, he just grabbed what Osbo deliberately offered - a small attack on pensioners. The true story of this budget is its lack of a sane economic strategy - a lack reflected in Miliband's cabinet. Along with zero talent.
what Alan Dunsmore above said is spot on, although i couldn't agree with his choices of Labour right-wing war-mongers and rights-abusers.
even just thinking about ANY of them reminds me of this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s8GvLKTsTuI&ob=av2e
i fear for this summer, Osbo and his tag-team buddies 'in the red corner' have left almost no hope for the great majority. Where this will end, no-one knows. But after last week, it is less likely to be a nice place. Frankly, it looks like war. No wonder the Tories want to put 10s of THOUSANDS of soldiers and private mercenaries on UK streets during the Olympics. They can no longer justify calling themselves the Govt, they lost legitimacy as soon as Osborne opened his mouth.
rioters get imprisoned, whilst bankers get rewarded for making people homeless and destitute. Osbo and his mates should be in prison, not all those teenagers.
@ Marathonman.
Mehdi can take it !
With a bit of luck one will have him 'on the run' !!
looked his usual stale self to me but just a tad less robotic. him and balls what a great team NOT! we are wasting our time.
why not get chuka in. he looks fresh and actually is worth listening too.
I agree with Mahdi Hassan this was the Ed_Miliband's best commons performance by far. But I want to tell Mahdi Hassan that I've NOT been surpised to see one or two racists or with narrow-minded individuals, here, who have nothing else to comment or say except to attack your as a muslim!
Hi Mahdi,
keep up the good work. And ignore the ignorant or racist.
Yes Ed was pretty good today. He had the Tories squirming.
I think EM delivers when it is necessary, though there are plenty around who want to beat him down. The question which is uppermost in my mind is this: how come Labour despite all the shocking economic news, the unpopular ConDem policies, is not riding high in the polls. Does this mean that the electorate does not trust Labour and still blame them for the economic mess left behind.
These performances are too rare a thing to celebrate much.
Chuka and Yvette now please.
@Mehdi
Given a choice between Progress and Ed Miliband, which would you go for?
Do you know how much Ed Balls will get back from the cut of 50% to 45%? Enough for couple of extra houses perhaps? There is no "me" in "hypocritical freeloader" as Balls would say.
I thought Ed Miliband's effort was rather childish.
Do your recall the good old days when economists called a spade a spade.
Direct and Indirect tax! Unearned Income. Married Man's allowance. Mortgage allowance.
Maybe indirect tax has a new name - flat tax. So democratic. Everybody pays the same tax - billionaire and poverty-stricken.
Those allowances - was it Nige Lawson who abolished these allowances whilst reducing the rich man's burden - are no longer allowable unless Dave and George try another three card trick!
Mark
This was an evil Budget. And who's to blame for it? Ed Milliband. There is no way the Tories would be this shameless, this bold, if they didn't know that Labour have no chance of winning the next election under him. If Labour had a strong, charismatic leader, the Tories would definitely think twice before lurching this far to the right. But they know they can do anything. And the longer that Ed Milliband is there and the less chance there is of him being replaced before the next election, the more scandalously the Tories will behave. Please resign, Ed. Please. You have had more than a fair chance and the public mood isn't budging. What's happening to the country now is so important, so critical, we need a leader who can articulate our anger and frustration and stop the Tories from acting with impunity. David Milliband. Alan Johnson, Jack Straw, for Christ's sake. They could all do a better job. Not Ed Balls obviously, his lack of charm is more problematic than Ed's lack of charisma. But there are alternatives. We need one of them. Now.
I haven't seen it yet and am just about to but given Mehdi Hasan is the biggest sycophant there is when it comes to Ed Miliband I have to treat this piece with caution. And even if he has done briliantly as Gerry Tierney says it's too rare a thing. I remember Mehdi Hasan saying at the height of the phone hacking scandal that Miliband had come of age and then his ratings started to plummet even further. I like Ed Miliband and I want him to be Prime Minister but I wish some on the left would stop looking at him and seeing some sort of Churchillian warrior that does not exist.
Keep pushing the line Mehdi, maybe you'll get another book deal out of it.
Well done Ed, not a great fan of yours but hopefully that was a performance to build on, and to prove doubters like myself that you deserve to lead my party.
It was a great budget - rewarded work and did nothing for the army of scroungers and public sector clock-watchers
Raising the personal allowance so much means this was a budget for people who want to work, rather than scrounge
Well done Edward that ride in the Rolls Royce on your sickie day from your future donour perked you up a bit at least.
Do you lot just read Mehdi's stuff in order just to slag him off? You Taggart! You don't miss an opportunity to have a pop no matter what Mehdi writes. If you find it all so disagreeable- my advice would be don't read it. Sad really.
He is certainly at his best when being more forceful and less collegiate.
I think he is finding his voice and that is great.
We just need that vision, to inspire and to say there is a better way.
Whatever gloss you put on Milliband the younger he still looks and sounds like a poor sixth form debater. The two Eds are too associated with the Big Brown Mess, upto their necks, both need to leave the front bench before the nation will take anything the opposition say on economic policy, serioulsy.
I see your fellow Mohammedans have been up to there usual tricks in France ! But hey, the poor little souls are just misunderstood ain't they Mehdi ?
When all is said and done however great an Opposition response is, it does not change the Budget one whit!
Why do these right wing nutbars insist on obsessing about the NS? Anybody with a brain cell and an ounce of honesty can see Osborne is an incompetent whose primary objective is to serve the interests of his class.
where is julia harris
@ Marathonman.
You - Marathonman - 'on the run' ?!
Ed Miliband's response was mediocre at best. At times he was apopletic & when he wanted the Government benches to put up their hands if they would benefit from the 50p rate change, was quite childish. He obviously thinks that Joe Public don't know of the millionaires in the Shadow Cabinet. Yes less than Government but they exist so he appeared hypocritical.
I thought that the budget had some good points to it,such as increasing earnings before paying tax. I also think that we should not be punishing people for having the nerve to make a success of there life. However we have to close these tax loopholes which allow people to benefit from the infrastructure and stability of our country (which we pay for) without contributing there fair share. One more thing. Mehdi, I have always wandered what the response of the opposition would be, if the chancellor did not cut the 50p tax rate for high earners. Would he say (A) you are doing the right thing and move on to the next part of the budget. Or (B) this just shows that he is weak in the face of criticism in order to score political points. If you think he would say the latter then his critique is surely an irrelavence.
Ed just about caught George Boy with every 'ook in the book.
A bemused Cameron kept urging his man forward and Osborne's other corner man, the guy with the bucket, had to turn away in horror.
In the end, to give fight fans their money's worth. Ed had to hold George up for the last few rounds.
What a mis-match. Sending a boy to do a man's job.
Loved the Budget though - rich man, poor man, beggar man, thief! Did the poor man get a look in? Naw!
Pharisees
looking at the comments post by those right wing Morons attacking Mehdi on his beleives and Ed on his politics, makes me wonder how the sadness in their life reflect on what they post..they must be lonely. give those groupies a hug especailly that racist guy
Tis true though Robert- you do have a go at Medhi Hasan quite a bit.
"George Osborne stood at the despatch box, with his glass of water, and performed a glorified version of a TV-news-channel paper review, confirming the various leaks and briefings to the press"
"It was, in my view, a brilliant speech - especially given how difficult and awkward it is for leaders of the opposition to respond to Budget statements in the Commons, at such short notice."
If osborne merely confirmed what was widely leaked then surely ed had plenty of notice before giving his response?
I must have watched a different budget.
In the UK i hear 9k before u have to pay tax? Have the socialists taken over??
Ah yes, i keep forgetting, if you want compassionate politics these days you have to vote tory...
Brilliant performance! Millibands'problem though is getting rid of the Blairite Right and it's camp followers ,some of whom write here.
I salute you Ed Miliband.
Those who congratulate you here will wake up tomorrow to a dose of brainwashing from LBC, the Mud-dock media and the Blairites, but I have always been convinced that you can deliver.
@ Anthony, you show yourself for who you are.
A RACIST.
Not a huge Ed Miliband fan, but this is the first time he has had some life in his performance. Labour may have some hope yet.
I thought EM did really well. Funny, incisive and to the point. Cameron and Gideon's faces were a picture. Cameron's usual smugness and Gideon's usual condescending sneer was replaced by a noticeble discomfort. Clegg looked like - well Clegg. After Gideon's snide remarks about Wallace and Grommit, EM's allusion to Downton Abbey was fantastic.
@Lady J,Just for you i'll repeat it -
I see your fellow Mohammedans have been up to there usual tricks in France ! But hey, the poor little souls are just misunderstood ain't they Mehdi ?
I think the exasperation on the government benches came from listening to the reply by the chief architects of the current economic disaster. I would be exasperated if I had to listen to that pair of twats lecture me after the mess that was left behind by Balls and David...sorry Ed Miliband.
Mehdi, I really do rather like you - even if you are something of an Islamist. Good stuff.
Ed is good but he got left a bad legacy. There is no hope for Labour if they have a leadership contest now, it is just too near the election. Anyone who wants to help Tony gaze at his navel should head off to the Middle-East, maybe they can start a war there - who knows!; it's time the pendulum swung away from Cameron though, we've had his empty 'big society' and all his smart remarks. All he does is use antithesis. I wouldn't even buy a toaster off him.
Ed Miliband - superb and the more the idiots on here knock you the more convinced you should become that you were superb. Most of your detractors on here are made up of Tory right "whingers" and ultra lefties, so when they carp you bark, you know you got it right.
I will carry the look of the Tory front bench in my heart and view the video of today for inspiration.
For those that missed it, see for yourself.
