What do you call someone who only speaks one language?
Mehdi Hassan is quick to denounce Rod Liddle's criticism of Islam as self-professed Islamophobia, but leaves himself open to a no less tiresome and trivialising charge of anti-semiticism.
Rather than weakly going on about double standards with regard to the kosher meat of Jews, he could avoid inviting a similar charge of double standards by complaining about all those schools, particularly in the London area, which expect non-Muslim pupils to eat halal meat, and by telling us how many schools expect non-Jewish pupils to eat kosher meat.
Launched by Jack Straw? Sounds so authentic, so auspicious.
Excellent post Felix.
imran you say its only a few muslims who support the terrorists,i dont beleive that and in fact every muslim country in the world has these so called few muslims who fight the jihad against the west all in the name of there religion.i have lost count how many court cases there are involving muslims accused of terrorist plots in the uk,the problem is bigger than we think in the uk with muslim extremism, and if medhi hassan is a so called moderate muslim well god help us.name me one country in the world imran where muslims and non muslims live in peace and harmony??
SORRY!! Tom, what is your racist problem with the English, wasn't the GREAT Thomas Paine ENGLISH?
LOU!! shack your fucking head.
I only read about half the comments on here before deciding to comment myself and it was the vegetarian that done it for me!
The animals slaughtered for meat are bread for meat! They would never have existed if we didn't want to eat them. How some one chooses to slaughter them doesn't really matter to anyone other than the person eating it.
Quorn made from soya is responsible for mass deforestation and intensive farming, both of which are a bigger moral dilemma (at least for me) than how a chicken will be killed for supper. For 1000's of years we have coexisted with nature and have killed animals for food and grown food stuffs. When the production of a food stuff (soya) becomes an ecological hazard then what has happened to us?
I'm not a man of religion but I understand what a huge part religion plays in a lot of lives. It doesn't matter which 'path to god' you choose the message is basically the same. Get on with each other and live life as a good person! Not the easiest thin to do all the time, but worth trying?
As for the press they blow everything out of proportion. I don't even think it a concious thing sometimes. They are middle England journalists living up to the middle England ideals where most people won't even speak to their neighbours, let alone venture into what another culture actually has to offer.
None of our Media are in the Fox News league bar The Express and Mail, but who reads their nonsense anyway
Des Demona @ 8:30ish:
Er, why must one assume 'Muslim' when reading 'Asian'? Given that if you include the various types of Buddhist and the Hindus, let alone the Sikhs and the various other options, most of Asia is not Islamic. In fact, I would say Islamic is the third or fourth choice down the list if all the data I have is 'Asian', first three being Zen Buddhist, Hindu or Theravada Buddhist.
Nick = Tory.
Oh Lou you must have hit a raw nerve with Luddite since he now resorts to Anglo-Saxon.
Yes Lou you are so right about the English who live abroad. They choose to emigrate to France or Spain, not speaking a word of the language, and then complain that the doctors and nurses in the hospital don't EVEN speak English! Bloody outrageous!(I've heard this kind of remark myself, I am not making it up)
Some English women, interviewed for a program about that on the telly, declared without the slight embarrassment that they didn't need or want to learn French (that was on the Cote d'Azure after years there)) because they could just go to the supermarket and throw stuff in their trolleys.
But someone who comes here, according to the morons on this site, shouldn't be allowed to speak their own language between themselves.
The English abroad (There are exceptions of course)also generally stick with their own, have no wish to mix with the natives, have no appreciation or knowledge of the culture, even have their own pubs and shops etc.. In France entire villages have been taken over by the Brits. Yes the locals resent the fact that they want to remain isolated and have come to France just because houses are cheaper and the weather better. It is insulting and STUPID.
But hey! they are Brits, it's ok for them to behave like that
Talking about double standards.
It also strikes me as ironic that on one hand Mehdi is quick to report the 'scoop' that Warsi says that Asians (and one must assume she means Muslims)have been engaging in systematic voting fraud - one could assume for the purpose of furthering of their Islamic agenda, what else?-
I wonder what Mehdi's take would have been had it been a non-muslim making that accusation?
I suspect it would have been howls of Islamophobia
Thanks Daniele. You said it all very much better than I did and highlighted exactly what I meant by pockets of Little Britain abroad and the double standards extended to communities in this country.
As for Luddite, well it's best not to feed the trolls. He clearly hasn't got anything relevant, intelligent or informed to say.
Islamophobia is a false premise in itself as "phobia" describes an "irrational fear or dislike".
There is much that it is rational to fear from Islam if one is, say, a homosexual, an apostate, or a non-believer, considering what it says about these groups in the Koran and how these groups are treated in Islamic states.
They are treated little better than cattle, arn't they Mehdi?
Not surprised that the media are anti Islamic with people like Warsi around. Didn't she just accuse the people of Pakistani origin (Muslims) of electoral fraud?
STOP WRITING ABOUT ISLAM - EVERY OTHER ARTICLE. WHY????????????
Well done for bringing this hypocricy and Islamophobia up.
The pope story was the clear proof of certain newspapers' agenda when it comes to Islam.
All forms of ritual slaughter without first stunning or shooting should be banned, as should the import of such meat. It is strange that the tolerant UK only requires women drivers to pass the same test as men. But Saudi Arabia won't allow them to drive at all! Though personally I would not allow a covered face for either a man or woman to drive on safety grounds.
Very good points on Islamophobia and halal, however I think most people who have a problem with Warsi do so because she is wheeled out to launch unjustified, badly thought-out and often plain wrong attacks on Labour. See the shambolic Huhne press conference, for example.
She may well have some excellent contributions to make to debates on religious tolerance, but her inability to demonstrate understanding or reason on a whole range of other issues rather dilutes the message.
It is refreashing that a politician of Ms. Warsi's stature is coming forward and saying what should have been said a long time ago; British and Western press is inherently anti-Islam and use all the tricks in the book to malign Muslim communities.
Criticism of an individual, a group and even religion is fine but it should have a purpose and reason.
No minority group should be subjected to insults and harm. This is against a democratic society's norms and also creates disharmony.
North Korea doesn't allow women to drive either.
"Can you imagine a headline which said "Jewish plot to kill..."?"
Well, how about BBC NEWS | Middle East | Jewish 'plot over Temple Mount' or, By Peter Day 03/05/06 "The Times" -- -- JEWISH terrorists plotted to assassinate Ernest Bevin, the foreign secretary?
1 seconds googling.
As for halal meat, you obviously did not see The One Shows propoganda piece on the subject last night. It seems that a great deal of meat sold in general is halal (and all of New Zealand lamb, bizarely), but none labelled so, though with only 10% to 12% only fully halal... i.e. killed without being stunned.
And can someone please tell me whats wrong with halal meat? Its absurd, that people talk about issues where they have no knowledge on.
The Daily Express and the Mail need to grow up and start reporting stories correctly. When a Muslim commits an evil act, the word Muslim is always mentioned, yet when a Christian does so, quite rightly the religion is not mentioned
The express and mail just need to start reporting properly they should start with something small the weather maybe and move up
good to see that bigotry and stupid assumptions aren't just reserved for the daily mail comment boards.
firstly on the issue of meat, it should really be labelled. not that much uk meat is properly halal anyway, but it should be labelled by law.
secondly. the right wing press are very anti-muslim, just as they were anti semetic and anti gay , anti immigrant etc. simple fact is populism sells papers. so when the express pastes a headline of "now muslims want shairah law" with a picture of buckingham palace with a pakistani flag on it as its front page, idiots shit themselves and start becoming paranoid. suddenly that muslim you worked with for 10 years is an enemy who is secretly plotting 'against the kuffar'. suddenly mosques become terror training camps. suddenly all muslims are put into the same boat, that of being 'the enemy'. anyone remember the 2 minutes of hate in 1984 ? well, thanks to 24 hour news, that can be 24 hours of hate. and it has worked, very well. we now have groups like the EDL feeling they are fighting for england by throwing bacon at mosques and abusing local people. we now find it acceptable for minorities to be abused because of their religion. we beleive in civil liberties, but when it comes to the burkah, we become authoritarian. and anyone who has a converse opinion is either 'politically correct' or a 'marxist'. its mccarthyism but with a new enemy, and the most educated generation (apparently) have fallen for it. for we have not learnt from the past, evidently.
so we shall continue letting the press play the us vs them game. making muslims 'prove' their alliegance to the uk. treat them with suspicion as if they are outsiders. and base all muslims in the uk on the conesnsus that they think like anjem chowdhury. eventually we will then slip into authoritarian thinking, and with the press supporting us we will be seen as noble and righteous by our kinsmen. after the whole ordeal, we will find that in the 21st century, in the age of technology, unlimited news acess and acess to knowledge at our fingertips, we are still as primitive as our predecessors. and then we will hope the next generation dosent make such a mistake.
Perhaps the quesstion should be why should the 97% of the population of this country who are not Muslim have to eat meat which has been killed under rituals stipulated by a middle eastern cult adhered to by a tiny minority?
The etymology of the word Islamophobia seems to be a problem to some commenters. It is not as simple as it's literal translation.
There's a huge debate out there on the word Islamophobia, what it is, what it means, what it represents and maybe that's another article for Mehdi?
I used it, as I've clearly stated on this page more than once, in the context of prejudice and discrimination.
Islamophobia is PREJUDICE against, or an irrational fear of Islam or Muslims. In 1997, the British Runnymede Trust, in a report launched by Jack Straw, defined Islamophobia as "an outlook or world-view involving an unfounded dread and dislike of Muslims, which results in practices of exclusion and DISCRIMINATION"
well she just signed her resignation letter that's independent thinking that is
While she's right to speak out about this she pretty much turns a blind eye towards all of the other injustices in this world.
The difference Hashim is, when a Mohammedan commits an evil act, they often, commit that act in the name of their religion. I honestly can't remember the last time a Christian committed a act of evil in the name of Jesus. So please stop playing the victim, and as for halah meat, it's wrong and should be band, cruelty to animals should never be tolerated.
Islam is the worls most practised faith and only 15% of the Muslim population are Middle Eastern.
Excellent commentary, thank you.
You mean... because I'm muslim, I MAY not be a terrorist? Wow thank you Warsi!
Medhi shrieks'' media is "anti-Islamic"
And Mohammedists are anti western, anti democratic, anti woman, anti gay, anti Christian. anti civilisation.
What a bunch of savages they are.
M E C
I was referring to its origin and the fact that only 3% of the population of THIS country adhere to it.
Hence it seems to be the tail wagging the dog wouldn't you say?
''STOP WRITING ABOUT ISLAM - EVERY OTHER ARTICLE.''
Medhi is a loathesome mohammedust, what do you expect.
And for a moment I thought myself likely to have affronted people on both sides of the argument, which is always worth doing. Drat. Lou - I wasn't sure if Luddite is a troll or just lacking in various departments.
Introduced as such and led an English rebel song in the pub session this evening - Sing John Ball by Sidney Carter. Great fun to sing. Only problem is the last verse 'Labour and spin...'
Omit and have only three verses, or include and risk risible misunderstanding? Perhaps explain meaning in advance? Hmm.
Quorn isn't made from Soya.
Well... how does Christianity fare where they come from... Ohhh thats not an issue to be discussed... because where they come from they kill them and throw grenades into churches. ??? does it know that they burned a British schoolboy to death in this country... !
There's some great points in this article about Islamophobia but I can't agree with you on Baroness Warsi Mehdi. She is rightly saying that the media is anti Islamic but how does she explain her somewhat anti Islamic comment that Next Left reported at a dinner hosted for the Prsident of Kashmir when she said
" He says we need more Muslim MPs, more Muslims in the House of Lords. I would actually disagree with that, because one of the lessons we have learnt in the last five years in politics is that Muslims that go to parliament don't have any morals or principles.”
Doesn't this make sense??
Base decisions on science!! ... not emotional mumbo jumbo..
You have taken interesting perpective but hey, we are only responding to what lefties are trying to force down our throat. And is left not the one which sneers at the various injustices....all the time, most of them statistically insignificant to the ones you mentioned. So in a way, and because your arguments are quite strong, they can camouflage the real issue being raised here. Dont you thing?
As a vegetarian I condemn halal meet as much as any form of religious/secular animal slaughter. We now have the means of getting the same nutrition from foods such as Quorn instead of butchering animals in often horrific circumstances. But these stories by the right wing press are only designed to stoke racial tensions within the population, so that I also condemn!
Mehdi - with the greatest respect, that's not a very fair representation of the tone, tenor or factual content of my piece. The first seven hundred words were a defence of Muslims and an attack on those who whip up inflammatory feeling against them. I also say "....Muslims being targeted by the state for imagined office, or vilified by the press on account of the clothes they choose to wear, or beaten up by some untermensch thug because they are a different colour." And
"Muslims are rather more sinned against than sinning and they are not to blame for the political correctness shown by state or quasi state institutions....." and so on, and so on.
My attack was on big business for inflicting a non-choice upon me and the majority who do not wish to eat halal-slaughtered meat, and my anger a consequence of that. I'm sorry, meanwhile if in my diatribe I was partially wrong about Nandos (although not Pizza Hut).
The kosher question doesn't arise because, so far as I am aware, we are not being fed it, unlabelled, in our restaurants or supermarkets.
But really to describe that piece as a rant against British Muslims is about as far from the mark as its possible to be. You must know that, as you seem to have read the article.
(In my first quote it should have read "Muslims targeted by the state for imagined offences" not "imagined offices")
Far down the original article about Halal meat in our supermarkets it says this -
"All Islamically slaughtered lamb and chicken sold in British supermarkets is stunned before being killed, but is not labelled as halal. Moderate Islamic groups allow animals to be stunned before slaughter, which brings the practice in line with Western methods"
In fact all the places charged with selling Halal meat, except Subway, say about the stunning process being used beforehand.
Prior stunning fits in with the rcommendations of the Farm Animal Welfare Council in June 2003, Compassion in World Farming also recommended this stunning before slaughter approach.
So their headline 'top supermarkets secretly sell Halal' is somewhat misleading don't you think?
Halal meat isn't stunned beforehand and it is that slaughter process that people object to but the evidence says that meat sold in supermarkets is not ritually slaughtered without prior stunning or anaesthetising.
Perhaps the best thing a journalist could do before running an article on an article in a crappy paper is find out the facts for themselves.
If you disagree with the right wing press, you can always read the Mirror you know.
