An invitation to Caracas

A meeting with the mayor results in an interesting offer

Had an interesting encounter with Ken at yesterday's London lunch, sponsored by this magazine. He was charming despite the criticisms of his foreign policy in my Statesman piece this week. He said I should meet Hugo Chavez and invited me to join him on a trip to Venezuela when he opens an office in Caracas. He warned me against joining the smear campaign against Chavez orchestrated by certain sections of the press. I will certainly take him up on the offer, but it seems that it's not just the media, but Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch who have raised concerns about Chavez. However, I will reserve judgement until after the trip. Watch this space.
