Following rapid digital growth in 2020, we are recruiting an Audience Editor to join our online team.

About the role:

The New Statesman is looking for a talented and experienced Audience Editor to join its online editorial team. The successful candidate will be responsible for creating and implementing an effective strategy for audience growth from search, syndication, social and video, working closely with the senior digital editor and deputy digital editor. They will understand how to find, wrangle and present data with actionable insights for non-experts working in editorial, commercial and marketing teams.

General responsibilities:

· Manage and execute the implementation of the New Statesman’s SEO strategy, which is mainly focused on editorial traffic optimisation and growth, but also aid marketing and commercial initiatives

· Work with marketing teams to integrate audience insights into subscription growth plans

· Develop an audience data approach to commissioning online and integrate with senior online editor

· Oversee analytics platforms, including Google Analytics and and alert the editorial team to opportunities to attract audiences

· Monitor our day-to-day performance and monthly trends in search to ensure we are staying ahead of our previous performance and competition

· Own and lead regular analysis of data relating to articles and communicate it to the digital editorial team and others

· Be a super-user of and train editorial team on tools

· Create and maintain web analytics dashboards and reports in order to develop and recommend SEO strategies using Google Analytics, Excel and ideally or other database tools

· Provide SEO analysis and recommendations for specific elements and structures of websites, including news, features and landing pages, and for YouTube and social platforms

About you

· Have worked as a journalist or with journalists in a digital-focused role at an editorial publication

· Proven track record of securing audience growth through SEO and other forms of optimisation

· Deep understanding of what attracts digital audiences

· Understanding the technicalities of data provided by Google search, YouTube, newsletters, push alerts and social platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and others

· Ability to translate data into insights

· Experience using Google Analytics and and “data wrangling” tools to find and communicate insights (Excel or reports)

Skills & experience

· Excellent editorial judgement

· Hands-on approach to audience growth and ability to encourage others to work with you to achieve it

· Passionate about New Statesman content

· Able to work collaboratively across multiple teams
