Sadiq Khan wins Labour London mayoral nomination

The Tooting MP has triumphed against the bookmakers' favourite, Tessa Jowell, in the race.

By New Statesman

Sadiq Khan has won Labour’s mayoral nomination, defeating Tessa Jowell, the bookmakers’ favourite. He will likely face Zac Goldsmith, the MP for Richmond, in the race for City Hall in 2016.

Khan’s victory has been hailed by some as the first evidence of the Corbyn surge, although in 2010, Londoners backed David Miliband, the most right-wing candidate for the leadership, and Ken Livingstone, the most left-wing candidate for the mayoralty.

The results of the overall leadership election will be announced tomorrow. It is now highly likely that all three of Labour’s top posts will be filled by men, if, as expected, Jeremy Corbyn and Tom Watson emerge as leader and deputy leader.
