America's irresponsible media

A Republican bewails the lack of scrutiny applied to Barack Obama during the election campaign and attacks the 'liberal' tendencies of the US media

Should the media have taken a tougher stance on the new president elect?

How I would have loved to have had my ear against the door outside of the Boston Globe’s conference room on the morning of October 30th.

“A British paper discovered that Barack Obama’s aunt is living in squalor in a slum in South Boston.”

“A British paper!?!?”

The Boston Globe, headquartered in South Boston, had the story in its back yard. Yet it was the Times Online that first broke the news that Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama’s aunt is living illegally in the US despite being served a deportation order several years ago.

She has collected welfare while managing to contribute – illegally - $260 to her nephew’s campaign.

This issue might seem trite, given the millions that both candidates have amassed during months of campaigning. But it begs a bigger question – where are the priorities for the American media?

Reporting centered on emotion and not based on researching the facts is alarming. But it is nothing new to this presidential election. There have been several instances where the media – confronted with relevant news regarding Barack Obama – has decided simply to remain silent.

It’s appalling to think that the press, an institution defended in the United States Constitution (The First Amendment to the United States Constitution provides that "Congress shall make no law...abridging the freedom...of the press.") has squelched its own freedoms in order to help their candidate win – Barack Obama.

It’s no secret that the America mainstream media has a decidedly liberal bent to it. And this election may serve as “exhibit A.”

Consider several startling instances:

The Los Angeles Times is in possession of a 2003 tape where Senator Obama paid tribute with Palestinian scholar Rashid Khalidi at a private event. The Times is refusing to allow the pubic to review the tape claiming that they promised anonymity to the source that provided them with the tape. Khalidi served as a spokesman for the Palestine Liberation Organization in the 1970s.
Barack Obama had three reporters from newspapers that had endorsed John McCain removed from the campaign jet. Obama has built a campaign around inclusiveness and bringing people together. Where was the outrage from the rest of the media? Is this what we can expect if he wins?
Statements made by Obama appear to have had expiration dates on them, meaning that as soon as he contradicts himself, the media covers its mouth. On March 18, 2008, Obama said, “I could no more disown Jeremiah Wright than I could disown my own grandmother.” As soon as Reverend Wright became an issue, Obama cut off all ties to Wright. Yet contradictions such as this have largely been ignored.

In late October, the non-partisan Pew Center for Media Research reported significant bias in the way major news media has covered the campaign.

Pew reviewed hundreds of TV and print news reports about the candidates. The results were disturbing.

Fifty-seven percent of all stories about McCain were negative, compared to 29 percent of stories about Obama; just 14 percent of McCain stories were clearly positive, compared to 36 percent of Obama stories. Twenty-nine percent of McCain stories were neutral, compared to 35 percent of Obama stories.

And maybe the incident here in Boston can serve as an example of America’s decline in objective reporting.

What advantages did the Times Online have over American media giants such as the Boston Globe and the New York Times? The answer appears to be simple - common sense and attentive research.

The key to the story lies in a book that has been read by millions, especially those involved with the Obama campaign. Dreams From My Father, an autobiography, is a story of how the presidential hopeful traced his Kenyan roots and focused his life’s mission.

The American media seems to have ignored the passage indicating that at least one relative of Senator Obama’s had left Kenya and immigrated to America.

At one point in the book, Senator Obama’s half-sister speaks about Africans who had emigrated to the West and presumably disappeared:

“Like our Uncle Omar, in Boston . . . They’ve been lost, you see.”

Lost, kind of like the mainstream media here in the United States. It may have been beneficial to American voters if more British news groups had covered our election.

It disturbs me to think about what other things they would have uncovered.

The self-censorship relating to all matters concerning the atrocities commited by Israel against the Palestinians is another cause for serious concern.

Yeh, like the fact that Obama might be a Kenyan? Its no good blaming the so called liberal MSM.

There are 5 major US media corporations and they all sing from the same NWO hymn sheet. I could go on and point out who runs and owns these media giants, but then I`d be tarred with the anti-semitic white-wash brush.

Nither candidate was asked difficult questions and for a good reason. Most of our world is a construct, it is pointless looking at specifics, as we`d be here all day. But AMERIKA is the greatest construct of all. Its a joke of a democracy, its people are cocooned from the real world and even more so, they are cocooned from the reality that Amerika is falling apart. Its bust on a Federal level and by State and City.

The NWO controlled MSM have been happy to support Obama`s shallow (and pointless) agenda for change, they are SELLING a product, that not only can`t work, it won`t even be delivered.

As Joe Biden pointed out in a private meeting, something is going to happen in the early months of Obama`s presidency which will test his metal and the rest of the Western world. One can only imagine what the NWO has planned for us.LOL

Maybe a pandemic, more war, maybe global war, or more NWO sanctioned terror. LOL

Even, you are part of the game, your article is based on an inside perspective, you are lost within the construct. Look at the convergence. An economic meltdown that has been 15 years in the making, hacked financial systems, massive nationalisation, socialism in AMERIKA. With the sham war on terror (fatherland secu.), the US got very close to pre-war Germany and now we seen the US sliding into a fully blown fascist state, of course, YOU and the MSM, that YOU are critical off, are not reporting this...just another illustration of the NWO construct.

The people running the NWO are absolutely demented. The West has reached a point where further rises in living standards would see their power deminish, so the dog is tasked to chase its tail.

The MSM has a secret Marxist agenda? Right?

Some of these nuts actually believe that.

Why yes certainly it does. And there's something significant too in Barack Obama's initials. BO. As in there's more than a whiff of the communist about him, dammit.

Were it not for the media, would Obama not have won?

Can we become citizen activists and journalists to change the mainstream media? Hold them accountable by getting them on camera talking about their biases?!?! Become part of the ODM wiki and see for yourself: http://opendoormedia.org/wiki

Any comment on the Murdoch owned press and of course Murdoch's Fox TV?

Whose campaign was more negative Obama's or McCain's. Obama was accused of "palling around with terrorists" by Palin but Evan Lips complains of the press being negative about McCain. McCain had very little positive to say.

It's very hard to take this seriously. 'The American media have a liberal bent'?? Could we just calm down and realise that this is a historic moment and that some serious decisions on where the planet is going have to be made. I'm glad Barack Obama is making the decisions and not John MCCain.

Whether or not it is true that Obama's aunt allegedly lives illegally in the US and contributed $260 to Obama's campaign is very small beer indeed compared with the Mainstream media resolute failure to report the scientifically-attested MILLIONS of people dead in the Bush Wars.

It is estimated from UN agency and medical literature data that the avoidable deaths (non violent and violent excess deaths) associated so far with the Bush Wars (1990-2008) total 9-11 million (for details and documentation see "9-11 Excuse for US Global Genocide. The real 9-11 atrocity: Millions [9-11 million] Dead in Bush Wars": http://mwcnews.net/content/view/25184/42/ ).

And of course it is not just the US MSM that lie by omission - the same Culture of Ignoring, Culture of Denial, Culture of Looking Away, Culture of Holocaust Ignoring and Culture of Lying by Omission is present in the Mainstream media of the other Western Murdochracies.

Thus for a score of SHOCKING realities (including the 9-11 million dead in the Bush Wars) NOT reported by Bush-ite and neo-Bush-ite White Australian Mainstream media see the Letter I recently sent to about 3,000 variously eminent or influential Australian journalists, politicians, academics and other people imploring them to "please inform everyone you can" (see "Climate Criminal Australia’s Culture of Ignoring, Climate Terrorism, Climate Racism and Climate Genocide": http://www.green-blog.org/2008/10/22/climate-criminal-austra... and "Climate Emergency, Exceptionalism & Ignoring Downunder. Letter to Eminent Australians over Public Honesty": http://mwcnews.net/content/view/25702/42/ ). The positive response from people promising to "inform others" was a shocking 0.2% - "irresponsible" indeed.

what an utter pile of BS. Kudos to the NS for giving this loony a platform however, even the idjits have a right to be heard.

here's the biggie, Loony Lips - Barack Obama is NOT, i repeat NOT a liberal - he is AT MOST a conservative wet.

y'see, maybe in cloud-cuckoo-land the notion that continuing America's wars across the globe (including apparently directly threatening Pakistan along with Iran with being attacked if they don't completely fall into line with US policy), doing jack-shit to increase social democracy within the US, hob-nobbing with war criminals like Bitch Albright, Brzezinski, and the Clintons, and doing bugger all to prune the Military-Industrial Complex from its current dominant plutocratic position within the US polity, doth not look much like 'liberal' to anyone outside the inbred US political scene.

in any European election, anyone fighting on Obama's political stance would be seen as pretty far-out RIGHT WING.

Gods you people are stupid, this is equivalent to calling Chairman Mao a 'Liberal' because he wasn't as psychopathic as Stalin. And some still try to claim the US education system has not been 'dumbed down'.

you *really do* believe a story about some long-lost relative of Obama is actually important, don't you??

the World's financial systems are in a melt-down, we are once again on the brink of a global war with West v Islam / West v Russia / West v China / West v Developing Nations (yeah, nice one Chimpie!), yet you sincerely believe that learning about some hapless relative of Obama would change the Face of the Election. And that Obama is 'liberal', and the media's support of him is therefore proof that the US media is also 'liberal'.

the only good thing about articles from people like you, is that it can give Europeans an insight as to why American's seem so unbelievably stupid - with 'political commentary' stuck on your level, suddenly a lot becomes clearer to us. Idiocracy is NOT a movie about the future...

The media in the USA is the worst possible offender of the Republic that protects them,

The USA is constantly telling Russia to free the press,

This is the most disgusting display of self importance

Why would anyone like Putin want to unleash a bunch of idiots like we have in the USA, Slanted totally to the left and for what reason it is beyond logic. But it would do my heart good the next time the President of the USA tells Putin or whomever is running Russia to free the media for that person in Russia to tell the President of the USA to kiss his, well you get the idea.

On second thoughts, Lipovich might have a point. I mean look at the coverage of Uribe's Colombia - how often do you hear the MSM celebrating Uribe's death squads' murders of peasants and trade unionists. Imagine: " Got the bastards! A dozen down, 6 billion to go!" " Uribe's got it right - enslave them, starve them or shoot them; that's what we need here!" Instead the wet lefty press offer up limp excuses about 'fighting terrorism', or, even worse, pretend it isn't happening. And look at the treatment Hitler gets in the MSM!

Bravely said, Lipstein (deliberate allusion) - you are the wave of the future. Who needs the human race? The future is not a jackboot stamping on the human face forever, but a self-maintaining computer in a lifeless world, registering a profit eternally.

Mr. Lipperooni has a valid point. What was CNN doing covering this 6 YEAR OLD story

http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/10/22/rigging.election/inde...

just as questions regarding ACORN were beginning to air? It's clear that there was (and still is, of course)a slant - no, not just a slant, but a moving force of media outlets that were bent on getting Obama elected, regardless of the cost to their ethical integrity. No one seemed to notice, presumably because their favorite Idol was in teh spotlight (I think Barack sung Cat Steven's *Peace Train* that night...). Why our media have reduced themselves to the level of Seventeen Magazine I'll never understand.

Keep it up, Lipper - I for one prefer the conservatism of our founding fathers to the floundering-to-appease-every-interest-group ways of Europe, and I'm glad there are still a few dissenting opinions out there.

"Property is the fruit of labor - property is desirable - it is a positive good in the world. That some should be rich, shows that others may become rich, and hence is just encouragement to industry and enterprise. Let not he who is houseless pull down the house of another; but let him labor diligently and build one for himself, thus by example assuring that his own shall be safe from violence..."

Abraham Lincoln (reply to the New York Workingmen's Democratic Republican Association, Mar. 21, 1864)

"The only freedom which deserves the name is that of pursuing our own good in our own way, so long as we do not attempt to deprive others of theirs, or impede their efforts to obtain it. Each is the proper guardian of his own health, whether bodily, or mental or spiritual. Mankind are greater gainers by suffering each other to live as seems good to themselves, than by compelling each to live as seems good to the rest."

there certainly IS bias within US media - but it goes far deeper than this rather banal and adolescent ranting about 'liberal bias', and cuts to the core of the US polity.

"The USA is constantly telling Russia to free the press,

This is the most disgusting display of self importance

Why would anyone like Putin want to unleash a bunch of idiots like we have in the USA, Slanted totally to the left and for what reason it is beyond logic."

the American media are anything BUT free, they are ruled by a tiny minority, who have a very definite agenda. The translation of "free press" as abused by critters like Bush et al, is to allow the same cabal of ultra-wealthy to purchase ever more of the world's press. But this has created the exact *opposite* of a free press, the US media has far more in common with the Soviet era 'Pravda'. Check how few media outlets did their job and critiqued properly 'the case for war against Iraq', who critiqued the corruption endemic within the Bush Administration*, and how many question at all "America's Right to do as it Damn Well Pleases" based upon global military supremacy.

free press? PUH-Lease!!!!!

When we use the term 'free press' we are using it very loosely, everyone knows it isn't 'free', quite the opposite in fact, the press is owned and controlled by pretty much the same type of people who own and control everything else in the economy.

Obama was given an easy ride by the US press because this time he was the 'chosen one' and dreary, old, McCain wasn't. The American ruling class realised that Bush had become a dangerous liability, which is why support was withdrawn from him. A new, handsome, fresh face, was required, and Obama was the perfect way to re-brand the empire. The ruling elite are always on the look-out for people with promissing leadership qualities, which is why Clinton was raised up form virtual obscurity in Arkansas by his handlers.

Obama doesn't represent real change to the product, only a facelift designed to obscure how unchanged it still is.

I keep wondering why I can't seem to get swept along in the euphoric tide of emotion surrounding Obama. Is it just because I'm a cynic, or is it because I simply can't suspend disbelief and embrace the Obama narative? Maybe it's because I simply don't care about the colour of his skin very much, at least not positively. I don't believe the colour of his skin makes him a better person or a better politician.

I probably mean the opposite, that having his conservative political and social views and being 'black' is deeply disturbing to me and difficult to understand. I can only do it if I think of him as an incredibly ambitious, cynical and conceited individual, who has bought into the political culture of the United States; lock, stock and barrel.
