Decision on Brexit deal within week, says Macron

French president Emmanuel Macron has told Boris Johnson that EU leaders will decide at the end of this week's talks with UK officials whether his proposals for a new Brexit deal can succeed. Both sides are searching for a deal ahead of the EU Summit on 17 and 18 October. Johnson is bound by law to seek an extension delaying the UK's departure from the EU if a deal cannot be secured before the 31 October deadline.

Extinction Rebellion launches fortnight of protests

Climate change campaigners from Extinction Rebellion are beginning a series of protests and acts of civil disobedience in London and other UK cities. Over the weekend police made a number of pre-emptive arrests aimed at curbing the movement's activities planned for the next two weeks.

Counter terror police running secret Prevent database

UK counter terrorism police are running a secret database of individuals reported to the controversial Prevent ani-radicalisation programme. Figures released by Liberty and reported in the Guardian showed that more than 21,000 people were recorded as having been reported to Prevent in the three years up to March 2018.

US allows Turkey to move on Kurdish forces

The US has allowed the Turkish military to begin moving against Kurdish forces on the border with Syria. The Kurdish groups had previously received support from the US in their fight against Isis in the region.

Police ask for return of US diplomat's wife after fatal crash

The chief constable of Northamptonshire Police Force has asked US officials to return the wife of a US diplomat suspected of involvement in a fatal car crash. The woman, who the US has said is entitled to diplomatic immunity, left the UK despite telling police she wouldn't.
