20 under 40: Duncan Hames

Age: 34
Liberal Democrat, Chippenham

Duncan Hames first ran for election in 2000 at 22, losing to David Lammy. The Deloitte-trained accountant moved to Wiltshire and swiftly became a school governor and district councillor.

He ran and lost again in 2001 and 2005, but entered the Commons last year. Then, a month ago, he was appointed PPS to the Energy Secretary, Chris Huhne.

Hugely ambitious and rarely out of the Chamber, Hames is married to his fellow Lib Dem MP Jo Swinson.
