The right candidate for this role will be a skilful editor with excellent news instincts and a first-rate knowledge of UK politics. They will also have a strong interest in ideas and concepts and a keen understanding of the New Statesman’s editorial voice. Salary: DOE (competitive) The job will involve: – Commissioning and editing staff writers for the website and assisting with the daily schedule – Working closely with writers to sharpen and improve their pieces – Working flexibly, including possible evening and weekend shifts – Contributing ideas for impactful interviews, guest pieces and themed series – Assisting with social media promotion – Curating the homepage and editing columnists in the senior editor's absence The ideal candidate will have: – Significant experience of commissioning and editing writers across a range of subjects – A firm grasp of the news agenda, strong journalistic impulses, and a sense of what the NS can add to the debate – Good contacts and ideas on writers to bring to the NS – Sharp political instincts and an interest in domestic and foreign affairs, ideas, science, technology and books – Experience of using social media to promote pieces – An understanding of how data and analytics are used in journalism – An interest in production and design and a willingness to engage with other aspects of the publishing operation, including marketing and events Please apply by email, with “NS deputy online editor” in the subject line, and your CV, a cover letter including a critique of the New Statesman website, as well as three writers who you would like to read in the NS and why, to email@example.com.
