WATCH: 89-year-old Commons icon Betty Boothroyd champions second Brexit referendum

By Media Mole

The former Speaker of the House of Commons, Betty Boothroyd, gave a stonking speech at yesterday’s People’s Vote rally, championing a second referendum.

Although it’s often said that the young stand to be impacted the most from whatever Brexit we end up with, it has clearly exercised this 89-year-old parliamentary icon too.

Shouting the distinctive “Order, order!” of her past post to a cheering crowd, the baroness informed her audience that: “I thought, you know, my friends, that my rallying days were over. But this fight matters to me more than any I’ve known in my long life in politics, and I’m delighted to be invited to join you today.”

In her ninetieth year, the crossbench baroness told the young people in the crowd that “I’m with you because we have a common cause… the future is yours and should not rest with those who are rooted in the past.”
