The New Statesman has hired Julia Rampen as editor of The Staggers.

The move means that Julia will be in charge of commissioning and editing the New Statesman's online politics coverage, and writing for the popular Staggers blog. She joins from the Mirror, where she has been deputy editor of the award-winning online Money section. Educated at a comprehensive school in Edinburgh and then at Cambridge University, Julia has previously served as a senior reporter for Investment Week magazine and runs the Qisetna: Talking Syria blog.

The Staggers blog launched in 2009, and has previously been edited by George Eaton and Stephen Bush, who are now Political Editor and Special Correspondent at the New Statesman.

Helen Lewis, editor of the New Statesman website, says: "George and Stephen are a hard act to follow, but Julia has the right set of skills to round out our first-class politics team. It’s a turbulent time in Westminster, and I’m thrilled to have an experienced writer and editor in charge of the Staggers."

Jason Cowley, editor of the New Statesman, adds: "I’m delighted Julia is joining us. I was very impressed with her application. We have a great track record of discovering and nurturing talented journalists – such as Mehdi Hasan, Helen Lewis, Rafael Behr and Laurie Penny - and I expect her to do very well."

Julia Rampen says: "I have always admired the New Statesman's coverage, and the way it sparks new conversations in politics. I am hugely excited to take on the role of editing The Staggers.

"In the run-up to the recent elections, this online politics blog has provided some of the most insightful comment around.

"I'm very ambitious for its future, and hope that at a time of big political events, the blog will continue to offer a fresh perspective, and to be a forum where ideas are forged."

Julia will take up the position on 20 June. You can follow her on Twitter: @JuliaRampenMM
