Sign-up Sometimes, when your mole feels weary and alone on a listless Friday afternoon, it turns to the media outlet it can most trust for weird nonsensical coverage. That’s right, Russia Today (now known as RT, for respectability reasons) has delivered the goods again – this time with a fake knighting ceremony for former Ukip leader, resentful rebuffed knight-to-be, and err anti-establishment hero Nigel Farage. A little girl dressed up as the Queen turned up in the studio of Sam Delaney’s News Thing programme with an inflatable sword to give Farage a suitably degrading fake knighthood. “You are now SIR Nigel Farage!” yelled the host Delaney with joyous air quotes. “And we’re also making you honorary British ambassador to America and honorary MP for South Thanet because they didn’t elect you for real.” And as if listing his failed political ventures wasn’t enough, our tiny Queen then cut in: “My mummy says you hate foreigners.” “No, no, no little girl that’s very naughty!” the host shouted in mock panic to audible cackles from behind the cameras, while Farage grinned awkwardly. Although your mole has a suspicion this was scripted – not least because the offending quote with a video clip was briefed to news outlets by RT – it’s Farage’s hasty reaction that is most notable. “The Queen has to be non-political!” Just think about that phrase for a minute.
