The “Beast from the East” nickname shows even our weather is now xenophobic

A horribly fitting moniker for these divided times.

By Media Mole

In between Instagramming gutter pipes and praying for the train to work to be cancelled, your mole has taken a break from snow day merriment to think about the name we Brits have given the cold snap currently freezing our little island. Beast from the East.

Beast from the East? It sounds a bit…off, doesn’t it? A bit Red Peril? In our current climate (weather excluded), it seems horribly apt that we’ve chosen a nickname that builds an icy wedge between East and West, while conjuring the image of a monster from foreign lands coming to ravage our country.

Of course it was only a matter of time before Brexit would take over our weather events.

On the bright side, after the Beast from the East, it’s only fair to refer to the unpredictable arrival of Donald Trump, when he eventually storms in, as the Pest from the West.
