Less than a year after the ruling Democratic Party of Japan came into government, it has failed to win a majority in the upper-house elections, held early this month.

Commentators have laid the blame on economic instability. Japan’s public debt is nearly twice its GDP — and with an economy that size, who can afford to bail it out?
