Shabana Mahmood’s new police force

The Home Secretary’s proposals are radical. Will they be effective?

The Home Secretary is known for her blue Labour roots, a tough stance on immigration and has just proposed what she calls the “biggest ever” policing reforms for centuries.

Tom McTague joins Oli Dugmore to argue that Shabana Mahmood is one of the most impactful ministers working in government. They discuss her proposed organisational restructuring of Britain’s police forces, the increased use of facial recognition technology, and the suggested creation of a “British FBI”.

As Justice Secretary, Mahmood pushed through controversial policies including trials of chemical castration for sex offenders and the release of prisoners to ease overcrowding. Can she use that same approach to reform policing – and, perhaps, position herself for a future leadership bid?
