Grace Mugabe sues Zimbabwe newspaper for publishing WikiLeaks report

Grace Mugabe, the wife of Zimbabwe's president Robert Mugabe, has sued The Standard for reporting al

According to papers filed at the High Court in Harare on Wednesday, the Zimbabwean first lady is suing the newspaper for $15m (£9.5m).

She claimed that the article quoted extensively from a US embassy cable that alleged Mugabe was among a group of elite Zimbabweans who made "several hundred thousand dollars a month" from the sale of illegal diamonds mined in the Marange district.

The US diplomatic cable, dated 2008, says Grace Mugabe and Gideon Gono, the governor of the central bank, "reaped tremendous profits" from corruption at the violence-plagued diamond fields in eastern Zimbabwe.

The allegations cover a period before the formation of a unity government between Mugabe and Morgan Tsvangirai, the prime minister, in February 2009.

Mugabe's lawyer said the claims were "false, scandalous and malicious". Grace Mugabe added the allegation has tarnished her credibility as "a person of such high standing" in the minds of all "right thinking" people.
