US newspapers witness 27.2% fall in advertising revenue

Drop includes print and online operations.

Revenues for combined print and online newspaper advertising were $27.5bn by the end of 2009, down from $37.8bn in 2008, according to the latest figures from the Newspaper Association of America. Online revenues witnessed an unprecedented low, while the advertising revenue of newspaper websites fell 11.8 per cent as compared to an 1.8 per cent drop for 2008.

Since 2004, online revenues from newspaper websites have shot up 125 per cent. While digital revenues constitute 10 per cent of the newspaper business and revenue, online advertising alone is unlikely to make up for the print losses.
