The non-profit site called Meedan will also enable speakers of English and Arabic to communicate with each other in near-real time.

Everything posted on is translated by machines first and fine-tuned by humans. The system developed by IBM uses a team of 30 translators and editors to find and edit news.

Ed Bice, Meedan's co-founder and chief executive, said that the goal is to provide more media exchange across English and Arabic languages.
