The New Statesman presents: an audience with Hilary Mantel

Hilary Mantel joins NS contributing writer Erica Wagner onstage for a conversation covering the allure of the Tudors, the challenges of historical fiction and the story behind the remarkable adaptations.

By New Statesman

Hilary Mantel is one of our finest novelists: she is the first author to win two Man Booker Prizes with consecutive books. Wolf Hall and Bring Up the Bodies chart the rise of Thomas Cromwell – son of a blacksmith, former soldier, political genius, merchant, charmer, linguist, doting father – in the turbulent court of Henry VIII.

Wolf Hall and Bring Up the Bodies have been adapted for the stage in two acclaimed productions by Mike Poulton and directed by Jeremy Herrin. Originally presented in Stratford-upon-Avon by the Royal Shakespeare Company and commissioned by Playful Productions, the plays are currently playing at the Aldwych Theatre in London.
