BBC Panorama to air programme on public sector 'rich list'

The NHS has the highest number of staff earning more than £100,000 year.

BBC Panorama is to telecast an investigative programme on Monday night presenting the list of public sector staff who earn more than the Prime Minister.

Panorama carried out the survey in conjunction with the Bureau of Investigative Journalism (BIJ), a London-based independent body.

The BIJ used information from 2,400 freedom of information requests that the programme's journalists had submitted to public sector bodies asking for details of salaries above £100,000 a year.

The survey found that more than 9,000 public sector employees receive more than David Cameron's £142,500 prime-ministerial salary, while 38,000 people earn six-figure salaries.

The list compiled by the BIJ reveals that the NHS has the highest number of staff (26,000) earning more than £100,000 a year and nearly 6,500 of their pay packages exceed that of Cameron. About 17 teachers and 362 council officials earn more than the Prime Minister.

Also, 331 people were earning over £100,000 at the BBC, the survey revealed. While nearly 97 managers earn £160,000, about 10 have total remuneration packages of about £328,000 a year.
