Gaydio for LGBT audiences to launch on 18 June

The Manchester-based radio station will broadcast online and through 88.4FM in the Greater Mancheste

Gaydio, the UK's first dedicated FM radio station for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) audiences, will launch on 18 June. Gaydio said it will be a 24-hour channel and air a mixture of upbeat music and targeted speech programming.

The station was first conceived in 2006 by Ian Wallace and Toby Whitehouse to accompany the popular Manchester Pride festival, during which it broadcasted four pilots. Ofcom has now approved a full-year licence for the station.

Although full schedule details are yet to be released, it is understood that former Galaxy breakfast host Nicksy will host the afternoon shows and former Happy Mondays vocalist Rowetta will present the evening slots. The station has also signed up Terry Longden from the Channel 4 TV show, The Salon.
