Young workers have disproportionately lost their jobs during crisis, study finds

By Samuel Horti

Nearly a quarter of under-25 workers have been furloughed and more than a third are earning less now than they were at the start of the pandemic, according to a Resolution Foundation think tank report.

The report showed that the youngest had been hardest hit by the pandemic. 23 per cent of workers aged 18 to 24 had been furloughed and 9 per cent had lost their jobs. Among workers aged between 35 and 44, the group least affected by the pandemic, 15 per cent had either been furloughed or lost their jobs.

In total, 35 per cent of young workers said their pay had dropped during the pandemic, and 9 per cent said their pay had risen.

The think tank said the government should consider specific strategies for getting young people into work.
