Nearly third of people on Isle of Wight have downloaded NHS coronavirus tracing app

By Samuel Horti

Nearly a third of people on the Isle of Wight have downloaded the government’s coronavirus contact tracing app, despite it only becoming widely available today, local MP Bob Seely has said.

The government is trialling the app, designed to alert people if they have come into close contact with somebody who has coronavirus, on the island this week.

It was initially only made available for healthcare workers, but Seely told Sky News that many members of the public started downloading it anyway. Today, the trial has been extended to everyone on the island.

The app is still subject to change, and reports have suggested the government may be preparing to move it from a “centralised” model to a “decentralised” model favoured by Google and Apple. Other countries have made the shift: NS Tech reporter Laurie Clarke discusses the topic in detail here.
