Government’s Covid-19 media strategy criticised by two-thirds of Press Gazette readers

By Samuel Horti

The UK Government’s Covid-19 media relations strategy has been rated as either “poor” or “very poor” by two-thirds of Press Gazette readers, with some singling out the press office for criticism.

Out of 1,491 readers that responded to a Press Gazette survey, 46 per cent rated the government’s Covid-19 media operation as very poor, 20 per cent said it was poor, 12 per cent said it was okay and 13 per cent said it was very good.

Some journalists said the press office was controlling information around the virus too tightly. One national press journalist, who asked not to be named, said it was a “daily battle to get information out”.

“They won’t share information even when it is known and the department has committed to making it known. It is often impossible to speak to someone,” they said.
