There were 7,793 deaths from Covid-19 reported around the world yesterday, the highest daily increase since last Friday, 17 April.

Our daily coronavirus dashboard shows the number of global cases has passed 2.7 million, with almost 85,000 new cases reported yesterday.

The US recorded 3,332 deaths yesterday, an increase of more than 50 per cent on the previous day.

This brings the total number of coronavirus-related deaths in the US to just under 50,000, nearly twice as many as in Italy.

Italy and Spain both saw their own death rates rise by smaller margins, while the number of new deaths in the UK and France continued to trend downward.
