The New Statesman is hiring a Washington editor and an Asia editor

We are seeking applicants for two new senior roles, based in Washington, DC and Delhi.

By New Statesman

*/

The New Statesman Media Group is in the business of enlightened thinking. It is a fast growing, multi-platform media company based in London and centred on the New Statesman, the leading progressive political and cultural magazine in the United Kingdom and a famously sceptical and intelligent guide to a changing world. The magazine is the hub of a family of award-winning business and consumer publications and data providers. Together NSMG is now accelerating its transformation from a traditional publishing group into an integrated, global source of data, intelligence and analysis.

Washington editor

As part of its international expansion the New Statesman is seeking an editor to lead its coverage of American politics and foreign policy from Washington, DC. The successful candidate will have an excellent grasp of federal and state-level politics, American society and America’s role in the world. S/he will establish the New Statesman as a prominent source of reflective and thought-provoking coverage of America – writing a weekly magazine column on US politics, foreign policy and culture as well as online pieces and occasional cover features. S/he will get under the skin of America to explain the big long-term forces at work, challenge accepted wisdoms and explain what it all means for the wider world.

The Washington editor will also represent the New Statesman at events and in the news media; contribute occasionally to podcasts and newsletters; and help develop the New Statesman’s network of contributors. Day-to-day s/he will report to the International editor. The post will be based in Washington, DC but will involve reporting travel elsewhere in the US and potentially farther afield.

Asia editor

As part of its international expansion the New Statesman is seeking an editor to lead its coverage of Asia. The successful candidate will have an excellent grasp of Indian politics and culture, and experience of, ideally, one or more of China, south-east Asia or Japan. S/he will establish the New Statesman as a prominent source of reflective and thought-provoking coverage of India and Asia more widely – writing a weekly column on politics, foreign policy and culture in India and Asia as well as online pieces and occasional cover features. S/he will explain how the most populous and powerful continent is evolving and what this means for the wider world.

The Asia editor will also represent the New Statesman at events and in the news media; contribute occasionally to podcasts and newsletters; and help develop the New Statesman’s network of contributors. Day-to-day s/he will report to the International editor. The post will be based in Delhi but will involve reporting travel elsewhere in India and more widely in Asia.

To apply for either of these roles, please email Emily.Bootle@newstatesman.co.uk with a covering letter, CV and a short overview (three paragraphs or fewer) of how you would make the New Statesman’s coverage in your chosen area stand out.
