Books of the year 2011: Paul Johnson

Art - Edwina Sandys

The most startling book I came across this year was Edwina Sandys: Art (Glitterati Incorporated, £49). This is a blazing, full-colour album celebrating 49 years of the work of Sandys, who is a granddaughter of Winston Churchill, and has inherited all his enormous energy, vivacity, enthusiasm and love of colourful activity, as well as his daring in the world of art. She is both a sculptor, in every kind of material, and painter in all the media, and her work is electric, dynamic, powerful, eccentric and, at times, quite beautiful. She has gone to enormous trouble with this superbly produced book, which tells her life story as well as her adventures in art. The text is by Caroline Seebohm. It will make
a perfect Christmas present for a special friend with rumbustious tastes.
